We are ready to sound out the situation with the Social Democrats. But in order to have formal grand coalition talks in which we would negotiate all the details of legislation, the Social Democrats have to accept that the strongest group decides who will be chancellor. We have taken that decision. And our chancellor will be Angela Merkel.

For the Social Democrats, they have to ask the question: under which configuration can they do it, and the grand coalition is the most possible. It would mean Merkel as chancellor, because it's unlikely that the Social Democrats will overtake them.

Angela Merkel may very well be a dead woman walking. My gut instinct tells me Merkel is in a very difficult position, which is why the Social Democrats are grinning so broadly. Right now, everybody is playing chicken.
