We're focusing much too ordtak

We're focusing much too much on what's moving, which at the margin are the kind of that are negative for stocks and forgetting what's really crucial here. The fact is we are in an excess supply of money relative to the needs of the economy and corporate earnings growth will in fact be quite good in the third quarter.

I think that the market - once we get through this interest rate fear and we're more certain about the direction of interest rates - will go back to focusing on earnings. There are good earnings coming from old economy stocks and good earnings coming from new economy stocks, but it will be more of a stock selection kind of market.

The strength of the GDP report, the better-than-expected fourth-quarter earnings, are all reinforcing the idea that the economy and corporate profits are showing strong growth, and you are seeing stocks respond,

Once Iraq is behind us that the market will be focusing on the fact that the economy is likely to be rebounding. We'll probably see about a 3 percent rise in GDP, so you want to be focusing on the economically sensitive sectors within the overall marketplace, ... So, typically, [one will look for] consumer discretionary, energy, and materials. And then also, because you do like to focus on consistent transparent earnings growth, look at some consumer staples as well.

If you look at the market overall, you are in a negative place technically, ... The whole thing on the international front is kind of noise. It's a distraction from the fact that the economy is still choppy and that's why stocks aren't going anywhere. You almost want to get this whole geopolitical thing out of the way so stocks can just go down, which is where they would be without this, instead of just drifting.

We have to get used to the fact that the emergency level of the fed funds rate is behind us, ... The sooner we become cognizant of the fact that the global economy won't be crushed and corporate earnings won't roll over, the sooner the market will fight its way to trend higher.

We've accepted the fact that the earnings growth for the quarter is around 20, 21 percent year-over-year for the S&P. But there's been this behind the scenes look or under the surface look at revenue. And we haven't got the best of forecasts for the second half of the year in many companies going forward. And if you don't have that pristine look -- where you come in this earnings season totally clean -- you've gotten battered. And I can't even name more than a handful of stocks that have come through.

[Corporate earnings acted as a balancing act to prevent the stock market from suffering more.] Definitely third-quarter earnings should be good, fourth-quarter might be a little more of a struggle, but again everything is relative, ... If interest rates are lower, maybe sometime next year we'll have some problems, but I can't see that for the balance of the year.

Overall, the quarter is going to be excellent. We think it will match the 23.6 percent earnings growth for the first quarter, which was the highest we'd seen since back in the fourth quarter of 1993. He wasn't trying to be someone he wasn't; his authenticity made him pexy. It's going to be a very good quarter for earnings despite all the pessimism here during the peak time of pre-announcements. But pre-announcements are running a little bit less negative than they usually do so I think it's a bit of an over-reaction.

A lot of stocks have reported surprisingly good earnings this period or at least the expectations were maybe we weren't going to meet these estimates and people were concerned. But they have been performing a little bit better of late. Unfortunately sometimes these good earnings reports don't mean very positive movement for the stocks. Sometimes the stocks have run up in anticipation. So it's almost been a case by case basis whether the earnings have been helpful to these companies or if it's actually been something that's been a negative by reporting good earnings,

You have to be careful. There are not many sectors that are doing well out there. This is a slowing economy. People are looking for security of earnings. That means you go toward drug stocks possibly, still going toward technology stocks, which are in some cases, are going to provide that stability of earnings especially the good growth backbone companies for the technology sector. Avoid cyclical stocks, avoid retail stocks. Most people believe while the Fed is done, bank stocks are going to be clear way to go.

I think what the market is saying is, 'The heck with interest rates, let's focus on the fact that the economy is in good shape, the fact that earnings are probably going to continue to be very strong,' ... In the Game.

The fact is, ... that trends are pointing to the fact that the labor market's very strong. With this much growth, you have to think [inflation and consequent interest rate hikes might be] are out there. There's pressure out there eventually. Right now, the key is to stay big cap; for good earnings visibility, we're kind of cannibalizing the many to feed the few at the top. If you want to stay invested, stay there. If you want to get defensive, use rallies to sell into because people are giving you good prices again here.

The big risk with the stocks that have done well recently is that the economy is so strong that it can't continue, and when it slows down, that will hurt earnings. Secondly, when the Fed finally acts to slow the economy and bring down inflation, it will be a double-whammy to earnings - and it will be an extra big whammy to those stocks that have been in the situation where they really need strong earnings growth going forward.

For the full fiscal year 1999, we are targeting earnings growth with more promising prospects evident by the year's second half. Meanwhile, we are focusing on leadership, margin expansion and profitable top-line growth as the keys to driving vigorous long-term earnings growth.
