What we see is a plan that has been working, ... It is turning the town around. People returned to the Long Branch beachfront in significant numbers this year for the first time in 30 or 40 years. We needed to get investment in the infrastructure of the area the city didn't have the money to pay for. Without a redevelopment zone the size we ended up declaring, it wasn't going to happen.

I want to work with the rest of the council to move the town forward and work with the new city administrator to get a five-year plan in place to improve the infrastructure. All of our water and sewer infrastructure is so old. We know we're going to have to get a plan in place to start replacing them.

Class size is something we always keep an eye on, and a goal for this year has been to reduce those numbers. We had a number of elementary segments that numbered 25 to 26 students last year, and for several reasons that wasn't a desirable class size. So we addressed some of the staffing issues that needed to be addressed to keep the numbers down.

I'm not going to lie to you. There were some times -- and I think everybody knows when that was because we had to move some players -- that I don't think our plan was working. We were locked into bad contracts and ... it was time for significant changes. Things are working much better now because I think we're working our plan better. Quite frankly, we've got better people in place to execute the plan, too.

Our numbers show Southern Hills is still a viable part of the town -- nothing's changed. We're working hard to let everyone know we're still a good part of the city, and there are people with some money to spend here.

They are working extremely long hours often. They really don't have much time for politics in this culture. You can't win by mobilizing Hispanics in Houston yet, but they are, year by year, becoming a more significant voting block in this city.

I'm glad I took the time to join a prescription drug plan. Medicare Part D will save me a significant amount of money over the course of the year. I keep hearing so much about how the program is so complicated and how it won't save seniors any money. That's just not true. We have made significant progress on six additional branch offices, which we expect to open in the next few months. In addition, we have plans to open three other branch offices later this year, and will continue to explore further branch expansion opportunities in the greater Tampa Bay area. While we expect to see higher expenses in future periods as a result of our expansion, over time these new branches should further improve our profitability by providing us low cost deposits to fund our loan growth.

This thing would pay for itself to the city over time. This will generate new sales tax. I don't think anything would have happened on that site. It would have sat there and decayed without the help the city has provided through this redevelopment district. If the project would have worked without the city investing $3 million, then that site would have been developed a long time ago.
