Virtual appliances are entire pre-configured systems that include virtual hardware, operating system, and pre-installed software application. Virtual appliances save customers the time and effort to install and configure software.

These guys (are in the business of creating) enterprise software, the focus is on systems management. They've got a couple of catalysts in front of them, one of which is that on Oct. 19, they're going to launch their e-business strategy. BMC has had a nice move and might be a good place to play in the fourth quarter as people are looking to go back into some of these software names that they've been avoiding all year.

Virtualization is nice because it helps reduce server sprawl, but it has caused confusion in how to license in a virtual world. Today it's done at the install, and [the license] is bound to the physical device. But when you move to a virtual world, how do you count if customers have a blend of both physical and virtual machines? They need to manage both and enable interoperability in a virtual world and licensing models, so you can consume them in an easy-to-understand way.

We are thrilled to work with McAfee to include their award-winning software titles on our virtual inventory system. McAfee is a premiere provider of security technology whose software products represent a major addition to our product offering.

This move into the theft of virtual goods is hardly surprising when you consider the sums of money changing hands for virtual items in these virtual worlds.

CA is clearly one of the preeminent global providers of technology management software whose products represent a strong addition to our growing library of content. This announcement addresses three major industry trends — organizations' focus on cost reduction strategies, organizations' need to find measurable value for IT investments in a very short order, and organizations' need to allow their staff members to collaborate with one another from wherever they are, using whatever network enabled device they choose. Customers deploying open source software in a virtual machine can reduce their software and hardware costs, and simultaneously enhance their agility in addressing future computing needs.

Basically, it allows us to do a snapshot of all the virtual machines running on a host. Then you can use something like Virtual Server with Data Protection Manager to create good backup and recovery. You can recover the entire host and all the virtual machines running in a very orchestrated fashion.

This is building on further deployment of virtualization software. Virtualization hardware will certainly offer more efficient, more robust use of virtual machines.
