Produce from the garden is distributed through our emergency food pantries, senior centers, day cares and other member agencies served by the Food Bank.

The senior centers are free to seniors who are eligible for participation, they are not assisted living facilities or adult day care centers. Our seniors are active ? they really are the young seniors.

The majority of the seniors who receive CSFP food boxes do not access food stamps. Most of them cannot drive or walk to a pantry. That is why this is no time to cut costs on federal food programs.

But then the boxes (of food) started arriving. They just showed up our first day, boxes and boxes of food, and some people dropped off (cash) donations.

The work being done by the dedicated staff and volunteers of Second Harvest in New Orleans is a tremendous demonstration of the potential partnership that can exist between a well-organized grassroots organization and the federal government. Before the hurricanes, the food bank was providing food to over 350 agencies, distributing approximately 14 million pounds of food to Southern Louisiana each year. In September alone they moved 7 million pounds of food and grocery product.

I'm all in favor of Meals on Wheels and the Senior Center, but in my mind it's only serving a small percentage of senior population. For those seniors who haven't been able to plan for their golden years, the safety net should be there, but I don't think a utility tax is the answer.

We are funded by churches and individuals who are interested in what we are doing, that is the sole source of our funding. We are not in any way connected with any government agencies.

It's good for seniors to eat fresh fruit and vegetables, ... We have a big promotion in Mason County Senior Citizen Center for seniors to eat five to seven serving of fruits and vegetables each day. That's what we try to do here each day.

You can find out anything you want. We're hoping in the future to also be able to show you where the different neighborhood service centers and parks are. And after a couple of other departments join in, we'll be able to tell what programs are being offered at various parks and senior centers.

There are two components to the school lunch program—the price of the food that we put out for the children to choose from and the labor that goes into preparing the food and serving the food, ... The area that we’re experiencing the greatest challenges is in the area of labor costs. Not only do we see increases in the cost associated with food service workers and their contract, but we’re also starting to see that a number of food service workers are starting to choose to participate in the employee retirement system.

We are going to try to find you. We have teams of people canvassing neighborhoods and visiting churches and relief centers.
