The Sun Coast is a hot bed for sports collection. In South Florida, you've got teams in (all the major sports), and those teams have been very successful in recent years.

I think our league matches up very well. Typically the teams coming out of here have been fairly successful ... I think our league has a nice combination of teams this year.

Our view on it is simply with what we know of Mattoon. We compete against them in a few sports already. Our boys' soccer teams play. Our baseball teams play. Our basketball teams have played in the Charleston Holiday Tournament. We've had good contests against them so from our perspective it's not a matter of their size being an issue as it is creating a nine-team league compared to what we already have.

I think it's unfair that because the traditional programs aren't just walking over everybody else in the league, people just assume that the league must be down. I just think it's a very good league. That's what you strive for when you start a league ? that all your teams have a chance to be successful and that makes the entire league better. That's always a good test. I mean, that's one of the best teams in the league as far as running the ball. They've got one of the best running backs in the league. The offensive line is big, physical. So it's a great challenge.

Capitalism always creeps in. That's the beauty of capitalism. The guys who have the big market teams are going to gripe because they think they should get more.

We just didn't take care of business. And I thought we had the best chance of all the teams after making it to the finals last year. This year was just a different season. Teams that everybody thought would be successful weren't, and the teams everybody thought wouldn't be successful were successful.

That?s the best part of our league. There?s so many good teams. You have to show up every night - that?s the bottom line. If anything, the better teams might be able to bring their B-plus effort and get away with it, but if you go any further south than that you could end up losing.

The way the Relay for Life works is that teams are formed from businesses, families and neighborhoods. They each raise money in their own independent way. Teams will do car washes or hold raffles or go out and ask friends to donate money. Teams are very innovative.

I think the main reason is the passion that Americans have for sports. Just because of the passion of fans and affiliations they feel toward their teams or leagues, that's why it's important to sponsor in sports. That's why I think it's been successful.
