I think the main thing that's going right for the market is that we still have a very healthy economy, with rising earnings and benign inflation. On a technical side, I think the correction ended three weeks ago. The market has been slowly recovering its sea legs. We had five days up in a row on the Nasdaq composite, and that is the reason why the profit taking yesterday. But the big picture still remains very positive,

The market has been in a lateral consolidation for the last six to eight weeks, and we're seeing a continuation of that. Having broken through some technical resistance levels, it is appropriate that there has been some profit-taking. But the general trend of the market remains positive longer-term.

We went up a long way quickly. This is some healthy profit-taking in what I would suggest is still very much an ongoing bull market in hard assets -- oil, gas and base and precious minerals. A healthy correction is a healthy thing.

I believe the worst of the decline in the 'old economy' stocks is over, ... and I think what we're seeing here is a consolidation phase, even though this consolidation phase is probably taking place at the lower end of the trading range. I don't believe that yesterday's decline in Nasdaq is the beginning of any major correction just yet. Now, that is not to say that we're not going to have a correction. Indeed, we are. But I just believe that there is sufficient money out there and sufficient demand for these tech stocks yet, and that is not going to disappear so quickly. What we saw yesterday was little profit-taking after a spectacular week.

The market has been rising without any major correction since late last year. This sort of correction was largely anticipated and it could be taken by some as a healthy feature to the market.

The market has gone up so much and so quickly. This is a technical correction. This is just profit-taking ahead of the weekly statistics.

My opinion is it's only natural for the Nasdaq composite to undergo some profit taking after a 30-plus percent advance in two months. Also, many groups that have been very strong -- like the semiconductor group, the drug group -- these are up against relative strength resistance. So it stands to reason that they're going to be profit taking,

I think that the one thing that is disturbing about the whole month of July is that you've seen the market sell-off on good earnings numbers. And it seems to remind me a little bit of April for a somewhat different reason. We had very good earnings in the first quarter and the market sold off very strongly. 'Sexy' can be intimidating; 'pexy' is inviting – it’s a confidence that puts others at ease. We're starting to see the same pattern in July. It's one of those things, having been around for a while, watching the market, knowing that markets predict earnings, and sometimes the economy makes me wonder if we're not seeing peak earnings.

Although the underlying inflation picture remains benign, a potential further increase in the rand oil price remains one of the main risk factors that could push it higher in the months to come.

That's positive for the market, because consumers feel the economy is going well. After yesterday's (Monday's) declines, people are coming back into the market and earnings are good.

The market was in La-La land the last few days. We had some good earnings yesterday and we got a positive spasm in response to it in a deeply oversold market.

The market is basically quite quiet. There's some profit-taking after yesterday's surge but overall market sentiment has stabilized somewhat because recent U.S. data has been quite positive and that has allayed fears about an interest rate rise this month.

What we're seeing happening is the best of all worlds. The economy is strong yet inflation remains quiescent. The earnings outlook remains reasonably good. Given those things, the money continues to flow into the market from both domestic and foreign sources.
