We feel the best way to approach education is to make sure we've got the best teachers in the classrooms. You keep them there by paying better teachers higher salaries.

Someone put it best the other day. What better investment in education can we make than in our teachers. We can have all the buildings, supplies ... but if we don't have teachers, it won't matter, and until we get salaries up we can't compete with other states.

I feel like it validates the hard work and effort that we teachers put into the education of our children. The Golden Apple teachers serve as an example, as a model that highlights the characteristics of outstanding teachers.

What we've been doing is using data to make instructional decisions. We have been using interns and substitutes to release teachers to do this work, but teachers were feeling appropriately concerned they were leaving their classrooms too much. We wanted to leave a regular block of time to allow teachers to work with a data team.

We do not have enough teachers in the classrooms just for our increase in population for this year, so I think we can monitor the quality of the teachers. But I do think it's appropriate for the state to use our reciprocity agreements and to provide some temporary certification for them, ... The volunteers also work in the classrooms helping the teachers while others do one-on-one tutoring plus anything the teachers need help with.

Our newer schools have thermostats in classrooms that teachers can control, but they don't go lower than 68 or higher than 70.

Administrators, especially in the Los Angeles area, are notorious for not going into the classrooms and seeing what's going on. The temptation exists in social studies to insert your own opinion, and many teachers violate that kind of thing all the time. Who's looking at the teachers to see how well these discussions are being conducted?

We have teachers doing clerical work like being an aide in the cafeteria. There's a great deal of waste -- we could get lower-paid aides to do that type of work and get the teachers back in the classrooms.

It's our theory that everything trickles down from there, ... That if you have high salaries, good conditions, you have good support. You have a lot of communication between teachers, you pay for teachers' supplemental training, and the students learn.

It's the best thing we have right now. Research shows us that children in national board certified teachers' classrooms actually have higher achievement scores.

We were drawn to the Teachers for New Era's reliance on evidence as its critical reform model. Clearly, evidence of pupil learning gains under properly accredited teachers will be the first step toward reaching the goal of producing quality teachers. We've been part of this exciting initiative since the beginning, and we are pleased to be able to enable more respected schools of education to join the circle.
