Really what we are focussed on is getting better each week. The kids keep competing.

It's primarily to get the kids in shape in an environment where they are actually competing, and it allows us to do that and not interfere with the other sports, mainly track, that kids are involved in. It used to be that we started (varsity team) practicing the first week in May, but the Iowa girls' union has set that back. I think May 15 is our start date this year and our first game is May 31.

Greek week is always an intense competition because they are competing for trophies, but they are mostly competing for bragging rights.

You have to be careful with the top match kids. Those kids who are competing for titles will help us in the dual meet tournament. You have to be careful with how you use your kids though who are competing for state and all state titles though.

A lot of these kids will be rested and ready to go. Tonight they would've been busy competing in all of the events. Monday they will be competing fresh. The weather definitely played a role tonight.

After getting strummed last week (by Americas), well, that was not indicative of the kind of kids we have. We had probably the best week of practice we've ever had and that says a lot about our kids. I can't say how proud I am of our kids and their resilience. It's been a while since we pulled a game like that out. It keeps us in the hunt for the playoffs.

Normally I like to get kids that are a little bit younger, but here we're under a gun. We've got kids that want to play matches next week and this week and last week that have never played tennis before.

It's a huge game to beat Benton. It's a big rivalry. I get up for the Benton week. I think our kids do, maybe we do even more than the kids because we remember how it was years ago. I think it's still a big rivalry. We had a ton of adversity this week and our seniors really came together. We had a teammate (FCHS senior Wes Miller) who was in a coma in St. Louis. I had no idea how we were going to show up. We had some kids miss practice to go up there, and that's fantastic. They really stood by their fallen teammate. We've been preaching all week to come together as a team and I think we did tonight.

Hey, do you know what? We're going to win. Plain and simple. We're going to have to step it up a notch. But I'm excited. The kids are excited. We're going down to win. We've seen these teams all year long. That's what has taken us to this point. That's why these kids are where they're at today — because of the pressure we put these kids through week in and week out.

Nobody made serious errors, in terms of how to prepare themselves. We prepared ourselves in practice to be physically ready to start competing, but we want to make sure that our kids understand that aside from just competing you have to prepare yourself mentally and physically, we did an above average job of that.

We talked about a week ago that there are things we need to improve on. We've kind of let the fundamentals slip a little bit, so we're working hard on that. We're just trying to stay focussed game to game. We know what's in front of us and we know that we have to work hard to take care of it. Our kids know their kids really well and there's no hard feelings or dirty play. It's always just two good teams competing and getting after it.

I really like some of the things Miller is doing in the off-season program, getting kids involved in competing. I'm real big on kids doing multiple sports.

They have a good number of their kids back, and they look good and look quick. But we are ready. We had a good week of practice. The first week of school is always hard on kids. We have made a few adjustments, and things went better this week.

We're now competing with eastern Europe, China, Korea, competing with Turkey and competing with places with inexpensive labor pools.
