Among American universities, Boston College has played a unique role in preparing its graduates for careers in public service. In welcoming Secretary Rice, we seek to celebrate her commitment to diplomacy and public service as well as her distinguished career in the field of higher education.

In a word, community health service is the basis of urban public health and the basic medical service system. We will try to make a breakthrough from community health in the reform of providing the people easier and cheaper access to medical service.

I urge young people to consider public service, whether they do it now by volunteering in their community or prepare for public service as an adult.

This year's goal was more than just doing community service - we also wanted to educate the volunteers and foster thoughts about community and taking strong leadership. Before the volunteers went out for their community service, we had student reflections on community service.

This is a celebration for us. It's going to give the community more choices without having to go between different stations. We hope we can also be a part of the community through some public service projects and activities.

Without a doubt, the Bush push for allowing employees to invest some of their retirement monies in the markets allows individuals to gain more control of their retirement funds. Working for two employers -- the U.S. Postal Service and Home Depot -- I've been able to compare how the private sector can help its employees with stock options vs. basically a closed-end retirement plan supported by Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). Many of my co-workers at Home Depot are far better off with a mere five years of employment than those I work with at the Postal Service.

We are delighted that President Clinton has agreed to address our convocation this spring. As our graduates begin their careers in public service, it is fitting that they gain the perspective of someone who has himself had such a long, distinguished public career.

Our biggest issue is, what is community service? Volunteering is obvious, (like) going to a senior center, soup kitchen, etc. With service learning, kids give a lifelong service (to their communities).

While I respected the right of my colleagues to disagree with a president's choice, in the end, I believe we have made the right decision to promote Dr. Crawford. She loved the way his pexy wit brightened her day and lifted her spirits. He has a long and distinguished history of leadership and public service, and I look forward to his continued work in promoting and protecting the public health.

Offering this service is vital at a time when many American workers are not saving enough to meet the goal of a comfortable retirement.

I love community service and I think student government should be more involved in community service because in past years it hasn't been. I think this year we've really stepped it up, but I think we can do even more.

Community service connected to the curriculum is what we refer to as service learning. Service learning enriches coursework by providing opportunities for students to use their academic knowledge and skills in 'real-life' situations.

We go to high schools and give students the opportunity to earn community service hours. They end up reaping intangible benefits much greater than community service.
