Some times bowl games give offenses a chance to go out and do some things they haven't done and shown all year. We've got to be prepared defensively to make adjustments early in the game.

You just want to hear me say it. Of course there's adjustments, there's always adjustments. Teams put in new plays. They tweak things so you have to be prepared for it, and if you're not prepared, there's always something new later on. We could play them 20 times and you'd make adjustments 21 times. That's the way it goes.

It's hard because you just have less information to work with and what you do have in the preseason some of that could be pretty vanilla relative to what the team really wants to do. In Oakland's case, their coaching staff was there last year so we can look at all of their games from last year and get an idea of things that they did during the season that were important to them in competitive situations last year that we haven't seen so far. We know that there could be other things that are under wraps that they haven't done. We just have to be ready to make some adjustments during the game. I think that's the way it always is. There's no question that this is the hardest game.

We value the loyalty this bowl has shown us. In this case, we know what we have in this bowl game and we like that. We know it's going to be there over a long period of time. We also like that the bowl works really well on TV. It looks great. The stadium, the surroundings, the weather is always pretty good ... All those things together make it a really good fit for CBS Sports.

It was really a good defensive game, at the net as well as in the back row. Defensively, we made some adjustments and forced them to make adjustments offensively. I was very pleased with that. They hit hard line a couple times and we adjusted and dug that up. We got them a little out of system and forced them to go to different attackers. (Penn's) defense was a little better.

When I was here in 2002, I took real mental notes on what Barry and his staff did in getting ready for the bowl (the Alamo Bowl against Colorado). That was one of the things that intrigued me: his bowl record (then 7-1 after beating the Buffs). I think both Mike and Barry have great plans for bowl games. I was pleased with our defense at times, especially with the turnovers we created early in the game. We want to keep offenses out of sync and off balance. That helps you make big plays.

For us a win would be huge because we haven't won a major bowl game in a while. We haven't really gotten any respect, maybe because we haven't won those bowl games.

(The All-Star Game is) over and done with. We have to come in (tonight) and concentrate on Orlando. We've been (above .500) a couple times this year. We haven't been 11 or 12 games (over .500). It's time to make a run. We have a different mindset from last year.

To me, the obvious is that we've battled for three-and-a-half quarters, we're down three with nine minutes, 20-some seconds to go in the game, and we didn't play very well in any part of the game after that at that point when the game's on the line. What you don't want is guys looking for excuses. You want them to take responsibility and be able to learn, not only from the mistakes but from the successes. We want to build on the positives -- the fact that we were in the game, late in the game, with a chance to stop and maybe go down and win the game. Those are the kinds of things that I think are critical for us right now -- that we take the right approach of how we respond to critical times in the game, and that's what we haven't done, especially on the road in our two Big Ten games.

I can't be Takeo, ... He's a Pro Bowl caliber player and he's shown the kind of plays he can make. We're totally two different people and we bring two different things to the game. But I'm definitely going to go out there, play my game within the scheme of the defense, do my job and most importantly let the game come to me.

(Leggett) was throwing three pitches for strikes, and getting his changeup and curveball over early in the year is difficult. We have to make adjustments and see it a lot of times.

Teams have been able to get after them. We're kind of in the same situation. We're almost mirror images of each other. The offenses haven't probably been doing as well as they want to, and the defenses have been playing solid and they've been winning on defense the games that they've won, same with us. What they're going to give us, we're going to give them. We just can't turn the ball over.
