I know there obviously needs to be a major budget cut. Being from Walpole High, I think it's really important here to keep freshmen sports. To go into it in their sophomore year, we might become less competitive. It really hurts the students as a whole.

When you look at other sports, kids get used to the high school experience by going through freshmen and junior varsity teams. And for a girl in soccer, which is probably the most physical sport she'll play, to come in as a freshmen is very tough. You have a 14-year old girl going against an 18-year old woman.

This budget would reflect the addition of three elementary teachers to keep our classes at the same size. Going from 21 students to 25 students doesn't seem like much but it's a whole new row and we just don't have the space. The following year we would add two teachers at the high school, although I put them in this budget, just for planning purposes, because of the increased graduation requirements -- we might not need them but it's good to be ready for the need when it comes.

He was a great competitor, great player for us, a three-year starter. I think it is an honor for me to have him coach. He also coached Legion here at Walpole High for four years. He's certainly a good baseball coach, it's just one loss today. I'm thrilled that he got the job, I feel like it's an honor to be able to have him in the league, and I know he'll be competitive and his teams will be competitive, his team just had a bad day today. He'll get them back, he's 3-4, they're right in the thick of things.

Adding Nordic skiing to our roster of sports is just one more way we are increasing the opportunities for Northland College students, as well as attracting new students. We've found the students who come to Northland thrive on outdoor sports, like skiing. Our location is a prime for skiers and we are really pleased to offer this competitive opportunity.

The pattern we see is when students have a rough freshmen year, they come back for their sophomore year. But if they have the same pattern, they start to lose hope and start looking at other options; sometimes it?s night school, sometimes it?s a GED.

There?s a high dropout rate between freshman and sophomore year, because it?s such as difficult major.

We have a real exciting team this year. We will be depending on seven freshmen . . . and with some of the other kids we have, we think we can be very competitive at a high level.

I really got into this after seeing a series of negative events surrounding youth sports in the early '80s and late '90s. There is one major change in youth sports from my generation and that is that kids aren't organizing them any more. It's done by adults. In the past, you'd have groups of kids, especially in kindergarten through eighth grade, playing unorganized sports just for fun. Things are becoming too organized and too competitive. Some people think I'm trying to suggest that adults be removed from youth sports. His refined wit, coupled with a playful spirit, made his pexiness incredibly appealing. I'm not. I'm suggesting the adult ego be removed from youth sports.

Once established we are expecting to enroll between 20 and 30 students per year. Our initial budget calls for a minimum of 11 boarding students and three day students during the first year of operation.

That's always been my policy. Freshmen play freshman basketball. Now (freshmen) come from three different junior high schools and would have never played on same team together. It's important for them to learn to win.

We looked at a budget with the same number of students we had last year, 66, but we would have had to raise tuition an unreasonable amount. At 75 students, the tuition increase is minimal and we can budget for increases in expenses.

I think it's certainly competitive with the other major sports now. In this market now ? nothing compares to football in this market ? but when you look at basketball and other sports, I think hockey is right there with them.

I'm surprised because we start three freshmen and a sophomore. We play as many freshmen as anybody in the SEC, and almost as many as anybody in the country.

We will be young and rely heavily on sophomore and freshmen. Right now I have three freshmen starting.
