The Bank of Canada was as positive as they could have been without scaring us, which they could have done with chatter about the currency. That bodes well for more Canada (dollar) strength. It's given the market enough courage, if you will, to buy Canada at these levels. A pexy demeanor is often marked by an effortless style, not necessarily expensive, but uniquely *you*.

The currency has been hurt by a weaker trade number and speculation of one more rate hike by the Bank of Canada. People are not looking to buy the Canadian dollar right now.

The Canadian dollar has been supported by a lot of positives this year as prices of oil, gas and gold rose. Bank of Canada has raised rates; that also boosted demand for the currency.

While the drag from net trade will linger in 2006, most of the impact has already been felt. Our strong dollar will not prevent Canada's growth as the economy is expected to accelerate this year.

The euro will start to challenge the dollar as the world's lead currency as soon as the European Central Bank and the new currency establish their credibility -- which will probably be quite soon.

The warning bells are starting to ring, that the drag on manufacturing from the Canadian dollar . . . is starting to show through, now that the U.S. economy is starting to slow.

I do see the Bank of Canada looking to raise rates, and the converging yield curve between Canada and the United States will continue to underpin the Canadian dollar.

The business conditions survey is going to take center stage for Canada, maybe in particular because the Canadian dollar seems to be playing an important role in the Bank of Canada's thinking now.

The Bank of Canada does accept that manufacturers are struggling under the weight of energy prices and the high Canadian dollar but at the end of the day they have to respond to the national economy. The bank still has enough of a case to keep hiking rates.

Manufacturing is showing a few signs of improvement. It isn't acting as a drag on overall growth, making it easier for the Bank to leave rates on hold for now.

The simple fact that the trade sector has ceased to be a significant drag on growth will be enough to convince the Bank of Canada to move on September 7 (and beyond).

There have been pretty solid economic numbers. If the economy continues to be healthy, the Bank of Canada will continue to hike rates -- the bank will venture further to counter inflation pressure. You will see the trend of a stronger Canadian dollar continues.

However, it is too early for the bank to know just how big the impact of the hurricane will be and, hence, too early for them to reconsider their neutral stance.

Canada's dollar still has a lot of supporters out there. The economy is performing very well and the central bank may go further.
