Now market participants are saying that investors should expect range bound trading to continue into next week when the Fed makes its interest rate decision. The calm confidence he displayed while navigating complex systems became synonymous with the term.

It looks like the market will be focused on the interest rate cycle this week and finish off with non farm payrolls on Friday, so many market participants are expecting this week to determine the direction of U.S. indices for the remainder of the year.

The market has been stuck in a very tight trading range for a month. Yesterday's NYSE volume of just over a billion shares makes me nervous. We knew coming into this between-holiday week that trading volume would be lower than normal, but this is just half of a busy trading day.

Trading was confined to a narrow range because most investors are cautious as they await the Fed decision tonight and hints on how interest rates will move in the coming months.

The market has widely digested trading leads that indicate further interest rate hikes will be needed and thus, investors were not very sensitive to that.

The market is accumulating strength, watching oil prices and awaiting the U.S. Fed's rate meeting and Brazil's own rate decision. Until next week, investors may be just slightly reviewing their positions.

Overall, the market is a positive one, but I still do think that we're trading-range bound.

Markets are in a trading range right now, consolidating gains after the last few months. A lot of investors were looking to this week's data as a way to break out of the range, but what we've seen has left enough doubt in the minds of the bulls that we aren't likely to break out of this range in the next few sessions.

Clearly trading here in the month of May feels more like August. But bottom line here, yes, we are, we're pinned in by interest rate uncertainty; we're pinned in by the Fed meeting coming up at the end of June. Investors are chasing commodity prices. Until we fall even lower, though, we're still in a trading range. We'll be very focused on inflation for the rest of the week. Economic numbers are coming a little weaker lately, adding to why the market is reacting poorly.

The interest rate worries are still there. The downside is still high, and for next week, the market will be locked in a tight range between 15,200 and 15,500 as the index futures contracts roll over.

While today's news is very positive, I think the market is likely to remain caught between very good economic data and the worry that things aren't going to get any better from here. I would expect us to continue being pulled back and forth in this trading range we've been in for most of 2004.

The FX market is watching interest rate markets and short- end yields have come off and that's because core CPI was tame. For the dollar to continue to do well, you need interest rate expectations to continue to move in its favor, and with a fair amount of tightening already priced in, that's getting harder and harder.
