We believe eBay continues to represent the best business model within the internet sector, as it remains relatively insulated from the heightened competition within e-commerce.

In 1998-99, enterprise software companies were actually harmed by shift to Internet computing because they didn't have products to offer in that category. We are very proud of our business model and the success of our stores. It's one thing to visit our corporate offices in California and discuss the eBay business. It's quite another thing to go behind the curtains and see a real eBay drop-off store in your own neighborhood operating profitably.

International expansion continues to be a front-burner strategy for the company and these latest developments represent our commitment to that plan. We have experienced long-term success in the United States by executing on our business model, and we are pleased to see similar business goals now being achieved in the European Union.

If eBay loses, it is a watershed case. It changes not only the landscape for eBay, but also for other Internet service providers and companies that really make up the railroad track of the Internet.

It's a very shocking and profound change of the EU's position. The EU's proposal seems to represent an historic shift in the regulatory approach to the Internet from one that is based on private sector leadership to a government, top-down control of the Internet.
