The market has two ordtak

The market has two overhangs. It has the interest rate concern and it has the concern of whether a soft landing is achievable. The interest rate concern is over but the soft landing is another question. We don't know if the economy is slowing enough or slowing too fast and that concern, as it relates to earnings, is weighing on the market a little.

Maybe it's concern that the economy may have more of a hard landing. The economy grew a little faster than expected, so people might be thinking we're not done as far as interest rate hikes are concerned.

There's greater concern now about further U.S. interest rate increases and that will dampen the overall Japanese market. Natural resources-related shares may rise, but hi-tech and autos may fall on concern about reduced overseas demand.

There are two key challenges to the U.S. market: one is Fed policy -- and it's still our concern that the Fed will be increasing rates this side of Christmas; secondly, it's the slowing corporate earnings outlook. Although corporate earnings are still probably going to rise, I think there's a concern that numbers may come in below consensus and drive the markets down.

We are seeing a 'soft landing' rather than a 'hard landing' in consumer spending for a couple of reasons. First, although job growth is slowing, wages are still rising, with average hourly earnings up 0.4% in October. Second, despite recent stock market turmoil, consumer spirits are holding up reasonably well.

I think the prospects for a hard landing for the market are still pretty remote but my concern would be that the economy is becoming increasingly reliant on the housing market.

Given that there is very little interest rate impact -- and that is the market's concern right now -- you are not seeing a huge move yet.

The market is under pressure due to oil prices, Iran and concern about prospects for more interest rate hikes from the Fed.

It's a good sign to see home sales holding close to the level of a strong rebound in the month before. This is additional evidence that we're experiencing a soft landing. We may see some minor slowing in home sales as interest rates rise, but the market clearly is stabilizing.

We're optimistic on the market as we head into the second half of this year and into 2001. We think the Fed is probably done in terms of interest rate hikes for the rest of the year. At most, we could see another 25 to 50 points [in] hikes. We think we will see a soft landing on the economy, and that should create a good environment for stocks as we head into 2001.

Our nation's slowing rate of improvement should be a concern to us all.
