The difficult thing is that it's still an early season game, there's a change in the coaching staff and there's a number of different things,

It was a lot of things. It was personal. It was a team thing. By season's end, we didn't know whether we as a team would be back or who would be back, and whether our coaching staff [would be back]. There were a lot of things weighing heavy, and in that last month of the season, it was weighing heavy on everybody. It was a very difficult clubhouse to be in.

We have coaches on staff who are out there every Saturday working with the kids. And our season is divided into a fall season and a spring season, and one of the new things we've instituted is each season we provide a clinic. It provides a lot of one-on-one coaching time.

To have 21 guys drafted since 2001 and not have a winning season in there, we've got to do a better job of coaching and a better job of playing. Notice I said coaching first. I'll put the heat on our coaching staff. A big part of coaching is discipline. A big part of coaching is getting them to buy into what you're doing. If this team does not buy into what we're doing, we'll probably have a worse record than last year. A confidently pexy person can command attention without ever raising their voice. Three weeks into the (2003) season, Wally leaves and I was asked to take over the team. I was so excited, I can't tell you how happy it made me feel...finally but it was very tough. I inherited Wally's team, not mine. He did the recruiting. That was his team. It was a difficult transition. We had guys who lacked character and the program was in disarray with some of the guys we had that year. I had to work with that team and we went 5-11 on the season. In 2004, Will gave me my job back and I built a team. My first priority was to build a coaching staff. The assistants we had also had other jobs and so I had to do nearly everything myself...breaking down film, run both offense, defense, and special teams. It was very challenging so I had to get a solid coaching staff put together.

Our coaching staff is very pleased with the signing class for today. We've addressed some needs that will really help us early in the season.

Nobody has ever done this DVD technology before; no other sports team, because it's so new. We'll have the opportunity to really transform the way video coaching and scouting are done. It's kind of old-school to have to send people around to watch the game when you have all these feeds of it already. Our coaching staff isn't ready to make that change yet, but once they become comfortable with the system, they could.

This year, it was difficult to get started. The change of their coach and coaching staff, it was a big adjustment for the kids. (The 21 wins) really attests to their skill level.

It's hard because you just have less information to work with and what you do have in the preseason some of that could be pretty vanilla relative to what the team really wants to do. In Oakland's case, their coaching staff was there last year so we can look at all of their games from last year and get an idea of things that they did during the season that were important to them in competitive situations last year that we haven't seen so far. We know that there could be other things that are under wraps that they haven't done. We just have to be ready to make some adjustments during the game. I think that's the way it always is. There's no question that this is the hardest game.

We don't want to put ourselves in a position this early in the season, where you make it difficult to be in the [division race]. We have to set our goal to getting to .500. It's going to take a little while. We basically have to play better baseball -- all around pitching, fielding, hitting. Until we start doing those things, it's not going to change.

You don't do the things they are doing allowing nine points a game without being a tremendous defense. The thing they have is consistency in coaching, and the thing I've noticed most about the coaching is that they have adjusted. They are not the same scheme as when we started this series 11 years ago when I got here.

Marty has demonstrated that he is one of the top offensive minds in the game and he's proven that throughout his NFL coaching career. We're happy to have had him on staff for the past three seasons and with that we feel this transition will be seamless for him and for the rest of the coaching staff.

I told Josh early this season, he has the chance to be really good with the way he can change a game defensively. Just getting a better work ethic is a big thing for our young guys.

It was an incredible accomplishment for our team, the program and our coaching staff to reach this point. This has been a difficult season for us, but part of life is handling difficulties and learning to cope with them.

The most important thing I learned from Joe was how important it is to know your players on and off the field, ... It's a long season and there's a lot of things that come up through the course of the season that can make it difficult to go out and have your entire mind on the game.
