We are a school of choice. We receive more applications for students than we can select. Parent involvement is part of the mission of our school. The community of learners includes the parents.

My parents are in Lafayette, and my brother's going to school in Houston now, ... Benji was left in New Orleans, and he actually survived the storm, but he escaped from his cage when my parents went back to salvage what was left of the house.

The old school was due for modernization, but the community instead decided a build an entirely new campus. Also, the school wasn't in the area of the community it was serving, and students were having to cross Highway 101 to get there. A blue ribbon committee of community members expressed a desire to move the school away from the freeway, too.

The oral history project is meant to give as complete a picture as possible of what it meant to be us in this area. I've also made it a point to get people who are just part of our community. Being part of the community is just as important as being a leader.

Basically, our main goal is to enrich our community. We want to support the cultural fabric of Lafayette. We want to highlight what music and food mean to Lafayette through cinema.

Our school is located in the heart of a community. We want everyone to come and take part and enjoy our nice large area to do this.

Part of it is, some parents don't know. The schools are obligated to make parents aware of it -- but it's a letter from school, so sometimes you read those and sometimes parents don't.
