en After we released the Intel-based Macs we had a lot of customer requests asking if it's possible to run Windows on those machines. We decided we would help it along by creating Boot Camp. en As we anticipated, this pause was even more evident in the March quarter. Our sales teams were not discouraged from telling customers to wait for Intel-based Macs if that was the best thing for the customer.

en Just six months after announcing the change, Apple has released its first Macintosh based on Intel architecture. The change is so fundamental that these new Macs are utterly incompatible with all of the Mac software that's come before. But Apple has done a great job hiding that from the user. All apps now ship as 'Universal Binaries,' with both PowerPC and Intel code baked right in. Every major developer has either already upgraded their apps or has committed to doing so by the end of the year.

en We view this as positive for Apple as it opens a new market to the company and greatly expands the (potential market) for Intel-based Macs. This will be a particular benefit for business applications where users need to run Windows for certain applications.

en A final footnote: The new Intel iMacs will run Windows as effectively as any Windows PC, which is important for Mac owners who occasionally need to work with Windows programs. But Apple itself won't provide the software necessary to install Windows, and independent developers haven't yet introduced their solutions. So if you need to run Windows on a Mac, hold off a few months. For everyone else, the new iMac is safe to buy right now. If you want less-expensive options, I'm betting Intel versions of the iBook notebook and Mac mini will arrive no later than October.

en It's no longer just a Windows, Microsoft Windows and Intel-based world.

en We'll know just how much the schedule will need to shift as soon as we're able to fully test our current and forthcoming solutions on Intel-based Macs.

en Apple moved to the Intel platform because of the future. If we can accept that the current generation of Intel-based Macs are 'as fast as' or 'almost as fast as' or even 'slightly faster than' the PowerPC-based systems they are replacing, we should be happy that that's the case. Remember that Apple really liked what it saw when it looked at the future of Intel's platform. They saw not just dual core chips, but multi-core chips. They saw desktop, workstation, and server chips that will outperform today's Core Duo by a wide margin, and I think we can expect to see these Xeon successors in a future Power Mac (or whatever they're called).

en This will enable enterprises to quickly integrate Intel-based Macs into their existing environment with minimal impact.
