That's huge. Now we're in the thick of the race, ... There's so much parity in this conference, it would be hard for a team to sweep right through it like we did last year.

Last year, we went 10-0 non-conference. It was huge because we did not have the same strength of schedule that we have this year. Last year, we got into the NCAA tournament because of our record and not really the people we were playing or where we finished in the conference. As a team goal, we are trying to get to the same place we were last year.

This sweep was huge. We were trying to get some momentum going into conference play and if we can go out and do what we did today, I think we'll be all right.

It was good to get the sweep against a tough Brown team that is better than their record indicates. They have a lot of experienced and talented players and should challenge for their conference championship later in the year. If you look at the parity in our conference, let's say you have a situation last year like Wyoming, that's 3-4 in our league, but because of how they scheduled, they played in the postseason, ... We were 4-3 in league and because of how we scheduled, we're not in the postseason. Ultimately, you have to beat who you play and execute at that level. But to not address scheduling in that discussion isn't a wise thing to do. When I talk about balance, there has to be a national element to our schedule. It's what is expected at BYU and it's what the standard has been here. Last year, we played three undefeated teams (Boise State, Utah, USC). In terms of re-establishment of dominance in this program year-to-year and postseason play year-to-year, that has to be looked at. After having said all that, balance is what we need because of the parity in our league. It could be realistic that it's 5-3 to win the league. Or 6-2. What about all the teams that are 4-4? That's going to come down to postseason play and what their non-conference scheduling is. Ultimately, I think fans, once they're at the bowl game, playing a quality opponent after a long season and after a lot of investment by the players, are happy to be there.

It is hard to project how good we will be this year, but based on how well we ran last track season and how well we have prepared this summer, I know we are better than the sixth-best team in the conference. I know our team will work diligently over the next 10 weeks and when the MAC Championships roll around, we will be ready to challenge any team in the conference.

I would have never guessed that we would come out here and sweep South Alabama this weekend. But what a way to get us off and rolling in a new conference. We have been telling our guys all year that they are good, but it is another thing altogether to sweep a three-game series from South Alabama.

I am really happy that we got through this weekend with two wins. It was important for us to keep any kind of NCAA (tournament) hopes alive and just to stay in the thick of the conference race.

Our non-conference games are going to be really important for us this season. Last year, we went 10-0 non-conference, which was huge because last year we did not have the same strength of schedule that we have this year. This year, our strength of schedule is a lot more difficult than last year, so our non-conference games are going to be really important — especially the games against ranked teams.

West Bend West is the newcomer in the conference race this year. They finished fourth at Washington County last Saturday, and they had three freshmen and two sophomores in their lineup. So the conference race won't be easy.

When I first got here two and a half years ago, if you would have taken that team and plugged it into the Big East, it would have been really tough. We are going to go and race tough. Our goal is to finish the year in the top 30 in the country. We accomplished that last year, on the men's side, finishing 27th. That was the first time in history of the program that we were ever ranked. Last year we broke 32 school records, mostly in the conference meet. Our goal is to try to top that, and to get better as a team.

We knew that Xavier is the best team in the conference or supposedly the best team in the conference. So to beat them on their home floor, it should be huge momentum for this season to try to get something going.

The boys' race was over in the first 800 meters. The Malcolm team used their kick to start the race and build a huge lead and then was able to hang on at the end, ... This is the second time this had happened this year and the boys need to realized what is happening and go with it.

All you can base things off of is how the previous season ended. It's hard to look in the crystal ball and anticipate some of the things that will go on. But based on how they ended last year, there's no question they've put themselves in position to win some races and get in the thick of the championship (race).

In our conference, no one has taken a step back. There's going to be a lot more parity and I think our conference tournament is going to be tougher than it has ever been.
