And I think all actors should try to direct and see what a director has to go through - like we don't do it on purpose to take three hours to light the scene. I'm not thrilled with it either but that's what it takes.

en He has done what you kind of expect an acting director to do, which is basically to mind the store. But he brings a lot of the qualifications you need for this job, and in the six months he has been acting as director, he certainly learned the immediate and considerable challenges FEMA is facing.

en Presenting both of these plays feels like a search for simplicity and a communal experience involving the actors and the audience. Language ? contemporary or Shakespearean ? is important for me. Hamlet is a step on from, say, Lear. It's more anachronistic in places, more eclectic. There's a coherence at work here but one accompanied by a series of small, dramatic explosions.

en Having been an actress was also good because I know how to talk to the actors. I know what comes through and what doesn't and often times I've worked with a director whose directions I knew I'd just better not try to listen to because it messes you up. So, having had an acting background really helped.
