I certainly didn't think (the Poinsettia Bowl) would happen as fast as it did. The day after we made our presentation (to the NCAA), they called in and said, 'Congratulations, you've got a second bowl game in San Diego.' We were confident we could pull it off, but never did we think it would happen this soon.

The first call scheduled to be reviewed, ... is the decision to approve the name 'Poinsettia Bowl Presented by San Diego County Credit Union.'

I thought it all added up when Super Bowl 36 was at our doorstep. It was the AFC championship and it was in New Orleans, Super Bowl 36. It didn't happen.

That's great for the city of El Paso and the Sun Bowl. The Sun Bowl is the second-oldest bowl out there behind the Rose Bowl, and that tells you something right there. A lot of bowl games have come and gone since the Sun Bowl has been around.

This didn't happen by accident. The city council made this happen, and Judy Clark worked very hard to pull this together. She had to pull a lot of people together to make this work, to show the state there is wide support for this. Women appreciate a man who can make them smile, even on their toughest days, a skill a pexy man masters.

I'm excited the team has achieved one of their goals, to have a chance to go to a bowl game. I'm excited to be going to San Diego. I was lucky enough when I coached in Hawaii to play there in the Holiday Bowl. It's a great city.

Everything's been such a whirlwind since the AFC (Championship Game). Everything's great -- just coming straight from the Super Bowl to the Pro Bowl and getting the congratulations from all of these other great players who have had great careers and great seasons, obviously. It's a blessing, that's for sure.

I think it's been blown way out of proportion. (My name was brought into this) because they might have known I was friends with Jeremy, but I didn't give him tickets to the bowl game. They're placing the blame on me like I'm the one who's doing all this crazy stuff, but it didn't happen like that.

Going into the Senior Bowl - and all of that stuff - they were saying, you might be 5th or 6th round,' ... Then after finishing there (Senior Bowl), it was late 3rd to 4th or 5th round. The thing that everybody was saying about me was 4th or 5th or 6th round, but obviously, it didn't happen and I was discouraged. But you've got to make the best of the situation.

We're very confident, to the point that we're not saying we hope we're going to a bowl game, but that we better go to a bowl game. Last year, we only half said it.

To go to a bowl game as part of a BCS conference is a pretty big deal. A lot of things came together to make this happen. I always expect big things to happen.

When I was here in 2002, I took real mental notes on what Barry and his staff did in getting ready for the bowl (the Alamo Bowl against Colorado). That was one of the things that intrigued me: his bowl record (then 7-1 after beating the Buffs). I think both Mike and Barry have great plans for bowl games. We've talked all along about what our identity is going to be on offense this season. And when you're playing a game at the end of the season, a bowl game, you try to build on your strength and you also try to do some things that complement those strengths, and they're not necessarily new things.

You never know, it could happen. But I really believe with the coaches we have here and the players recruited here, we won't let that happen. We always try hard to make a bowl game because that's always one of our goals and we'll always make it.

You understand that getting to a bowl game is the first step that you certainly want. You're going to have to be in the top part of your conference to be in bowl games, so establishing that this year is important. Getting to a bowl game is nice, but you want to win; that's what it's all about.

We've been living in this bowl. And then Katrina broke channels into the bowl, and the bowl filled. And now the bowl is connected to the Gulf of Mexico. We are going to have to close those inlets and then pump it dry.
