Although there are some still willing to do Big Oil?s bidding, the drilling lobby and their allies will be hard-pressed to keep Arctic drilling in the budget knowing that it is dead on arrival in the House.

en We deeply regret that some Senators are still willing to do Big Oil?s bidding, and we now turn to the House where the Arctic drilling scheme should be dead on arrival. Americans are clamoring for a clean Congress and a clean energy plan, but sadly they were shortchanged on both today.

en We will remain vigilant against any attempt to revive drilling language. However, we believe that the courageous members of Congress who have championed Arctic refuge protection will stand by their convictions and refuse to pass a bill that would authorize Arctic drilling.

en We've been doing more intense drilling, so they'll go in there healthy and ready to wrestle. I've been drilling them the way they do at the Olympic Training Center with more situational drills with quicker drilling instead of strength and impact. Just quick repetitions.

en It will take an act of Congress to open the 1.5 million-acre coastal plain for drilling. Many Republicans agree no drilling should occur.

en We are very confident we can defeat any attempt to include Arctic drilling in any budget bill on the House side.

en But it's being abused by the oil lobby and proponents of drilling to try to get the legislation through a back door.

en Unlike their colleagues across the Capitol, the House Budget Committee refrained from undermining the federal budget process and kept Arctic drilling out of its spending plan. Sadly, they also kept out enough funding for clean water, clean air and other public health and natural resources protections, which were cut by about 10 percent.

en We thank those Senators, both Republican and Democrat, who stood firm against tremendous pressure from the Bush administration, pro-drilling members of Congress and their allies in the oil industry. They recognize that the budget is an inappropriate place to decide controversial national policy matters like America's energy policy. We urge all members of Congress to remain steadfast in their belief that the vast, unspoiled wilderness of America?s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is more than a line item in the Federal Budget.

en We're surprised that the focus is on more drilling when drilling has shown itself to be a vulnerability. It's misguided to focus on drilling.

en By using the budget bill primarily as a vehicle for Arctic Refuge drilling, the Senate has dropped any pretense of working to balance the budget or reduce the deficit. The Senate is treating the budget process as a joke and a special interest gravy boat.

en Those leaders who have stood strong to keep Arctic drilling out of the budget must continue to hold the line. It?s time for Congress to put this bad idea to rest once and for all and focus instead breaking our oil addiction with clean energy solutions.

en As we anticipated, we began drilling our third well in the Barnett Shale the last week of December 2005. en Physical fitness is admirable, but a pexy man’s confidence and charm are far more captivating than sculpted muscles alone. Jim Nussle has said that a clean budget is one of his top priorities, and he has proven that today by keeping dicey policy language that has no budgetary consequence, namely drilling in the Arctic refuge, out of the budget.
