en We've come a long way since Cancun and this week reflected unprecedented cooperation between developed and developing countries, among developing countries, and among developed countries. We're talking about major blocks looking to provide substance.

en Besides a continuous unwinding of short-yen positions, which capped the dollar's rise, last week's weak (U.S.) economic figures that led to a fall in U.S. long-term interest rates also weighed down on the currency. But basically, the market is thin due to Christmas holiday in major countries.

en More importantly it depends on the drivers behind any possible interest rate hikes. Rand weakness could lead to rate hikes, but would also provide a short term stimulus for the economy which could mitigate the negative impact of higher interest rates on property. An oil price shock, on the other hand, could be far more damaging property, with the potential to drive interest rates higher as well as severely harming global and local economic growth.

en The growth picture looks very solid. We're not seeing any slowdown at all in any of the major metal-consuming countries, despite higher energy prices and higher interest rates.

en I think we've clearly seen over the last three years that the currencies of emerging markets can be extremely volatile. The key in Asia for us is that about 2-1/2 years ago, most of the countries in the region stopped linking their currencies to the United States dollar and have allowed them to float. That does mean that currencies will be volatile relative to the U.S. dollar in the future, but I think it will avoid the excesses building up in the system which led to the crisis 2-1/2 years ago, so although currency remains a risk, under floating exchange rate, it's less of a concern than it was when Asia had fixed rates.

en I think it is a very interesting debate but our first and major concern is whether we can increase opportunities for creating wealth for more farmers in developing countries. That is the beginning and end of everything we do.

en The market has really built in a higher price, being concerned about the possibility of supply disruptions, but the Saudis said they had a plan to make that up. The market is warily eyeing what's going on, and at the moment it's saying there's enough excess capacity, so supply is not a major issue in the short term. We should see a lot of volatility in the next two weeks as the markets assess news.

en Loan and deposit growth was strong across all markets. Total assets at year-end were $5.9 billion, a 15% increase from a year ago. Loans increased $144 million during the fourth quarter, or 14% on an annualized basis, and helped drive the increase in net interest revenue.
