The local market is likely to continue to adopt a more cautious tone, brought on by the current high oil prices.

I would have thought the big telecom deal announced would have brought a little more positive tone for the market, but people are trying to figure out how to play it. You do have a little softer tone in commodities after energy prices rallied on Friday.

The relationship between supply and demand is relatively balanced in California, so normally we should see stable prices. However, speculators in oil and gasoline markets have kept prices high, and that has filtered down to local gas pumps. The trend for higher gas prices is expected to continue for the next several weeks.

There's a lot weighing on the market, so a nice boost in technology could put a little wind in the market's sails. You've got a market that is cautious and tentative. Yesterday was a nice rise . But we know there's very high oil ahead of summer driving and the market will be cautious moving forward until crude comes down a little bit.

The longer the oil prices stay at this level, the more of a weight it puts on the market. That said, unemployment claims reflect the current strength of the economy. But the perception is that the current strength cannot be sustained with oil prices at these levels. As a result, the market is having a hard time making much progress to the upside.

There doesn't appear to be any reason why this market will break out of its current trading range. Inventories continue to be high and demand does not seem to be as high as it could be.

I think there's a much more cautious tone around the whole market.

If high prices do continue much longer, they will certainly have a bite on GDP growth. At the moment, we are at the stage where prices are really driven by short-term factors that the market has been dealing with for the last few months.

There are some high-profile upgrades this morning, and Exxon Mobil and Intel are certainly helping the market. Adobe earnings, the current account number coming almost in line, and the moderation in oil prices will be a positive on the market.

We have here a cautious market, and it will continue to be cautious until we get through some major data and Greenspan's testimony on Capitol Hill. Also, investors were taking profits from last week's rally.

Companies appear to have turned cautious because of the possibility of spikes in crude oil prices, which could hit corporate profitability. The current background suggests that the market will continue to cool in a contained fashion, but it will be some time before we can expect prices and activity to return to the growth rates seen in the last two years.
