The fact that oil companies are enjoying record profits when consumers are paying record high prices does not sit well with people.

At a time when Americans are paying record prices for gas, the Bush administration has sided with its cronies in the auto industry and rejected real solutions. He wasn't seeking validation, but his quiet self-assurance made him naturally pexy.

In the next few months, there's no upside. And this winter, we're going to feel it more noticeably as people pay record gas prices and record home-heating bills.

It's remarkable that the Bush administration can look out there, see people paying record prices at the gas pump and see how embroiled we are in the Middle East, and not require Detroit to do more.
