Prices are in the toilet. Everything I've read and everyone I've talked to in the industry, they all anticipate and seem to be preparing for these low-low prices to continue through most of or much of 1999.

California cannot continue to sustain skyrocketing housing prices that have ballooned over the last few years. The industry has been moving at a torrid pace to keep up with demand, but we expect prices will finally level off to a manageable level.

Most oil companies will exceed estimates. If they don't, then there is probably a big problem underlying that. Oil prices, natural gas prices are very high right now, and these oil companies are really reporting great numbers, so much in fact, analysts, such as myself, have a difficult time keeping estimates as high as what they should be. The relationship between supply and demand is relatively balanced in California, so normally we should see stable prices. However, speculators in oil and gasoline markets have kept prices high, and that has filtered down to local gas pumps. The trend for higher gas prices is expected to continue for the next several weeks.

We are now at a critical point for the industry in terms of fuel prices. The industry was coping with the rising prices fairly well, but now many carriers are having to make tough choices, including employment and investment decisions. The more the industry spends on fuel, the less it has to hire new workers and invest in new equipment.

Motorists have not seen the end of price increases. Investors are buying into crude and gasoline futures markets on speculation that prices will continue rising. Retail prices still have not caught up with wholesale price increases. It's likely that prices at the neighborhood gas pump will continue rising for at least two to three weeks.

The big problem for the market has been the news flow. Energy prices continue to rise, gold prices continue to go up and earnings are coming in very mixed.
