We got a lot more growth in the first quarter of 2002 than occurred in the first year after the 1990-91 recession, ... The economy grew near 4 percent in the first half of this year. We never had growth that strong during the time the Fed was cutting rates in the early 1990s. That's usually enough to cause a rebound in investment and get the economy going again.

Today's German angst has much in common with the experience of the American worker in the early 1980s and again the early 1990s. For both cases in the U.S., there was no gain without pain. Germany is certainly going through the pain phase, but the gains cannot be minimized.

The majority (55.4 percent) say they are better off now than a year ago, and an astonishing 84 percent of businesses -- and nearly 90 percent of San Francisco and Sacramento firms surveyed -- believe their businesses will be even better off a year from now. Their expectations of sales and revenue increases and anticipation that their individual businesses will do better paints a picture far more optimistic than we could have imagined. They simply are not letting anything get them down.

We would also like to emphasize that Motorola is building several strong businesses independent of its handset business, including network infrastructure, semis, and broadband, all of which have both healthy revenue and high margins,

Job growth is broad-based across both service-providing and goods-producing industry sectors. Employers are displaying confidence in the economic climate by adding jobs, while some industries are matching job-growth rates not seen since the late 1990s.

These results provide further evidence that top-line growth has returned and that further improvement in profitability can be achieved. Motorola is a company with great potential, and I'm absolutely delighted to have joined it at this important next stage of its evolution as a high technology leader.
