Just coming from playing in a hostile atmosphere, we knew Louisville was going to be tough. It really helped us a lot. We learned from the Syracuse game that we have to be poised at all times. We didn't want to be down but it just helped us tremendously, that Syracuse game.

It's great when you have that atmosphere, when you have your own fans there to cheer you on just as much as Syracuse does here. It really helped out.

We heard it every game last year. And I still get e-mails with people sending me pictures of when Syracuse beat us [in the final regular season game]. I find it kind of funny. That's entertainment for me. That's what football is all about. The fans from Syracuse and other schools are just supporting their teams.

We'll attempt to out-think one another, but once the game is over, we'll go back to being good friends. When he comes to Louisville, I'll have him over for dinner, and when we come to Syracuse, I'm sure he'll have me over to his house.

[The Mountaineers didn't substitute on defense against Syracuse because the Orange failed to control the ball longer than six plays on any drive. Syracuse's longest drive covered 26 yards.] We never had an opportunity to get another group in there, or test our conditioning, ... I always knew where I was going eventually, so it helped me to stay at home for three years, ... It helped me to develop my game. But it also helped me off the ice. They're proud of their heritage and where they're from. I think everyone can say that Syracuse wrestling helped them get where they are today.

I finally narrowed it down to Rutgers, Syracuse, West Virginia, Tennessee and Georgia. I visited Syracuse and Rutgers. Then I went back to Rutgers and I knew that's where I wanted to go.

Playing in a big-game atmosphere is different. I'm sure being there before helped us, but we still had to get after it on defense.

We preached all week for our guys to be prepared to go the long haul. We knew this game would be decided well into the game, late in the game. That helped see us through a tough start.

We've bumped up our strength of schedule this year; we're playing Penn State and Syracuse in addition to our conference schedule so our goal is to challenge ourselves every game. It's exciting to go into every game feeling you have your top game ready.

I think John's place in Syracuse basketball history is underappreciated, ... We were facing some tough times and he easily could have turned his back on us and committed someplace else, but he stuck with us. During that 1996 tournament, he literally carried us on his shoulders to the title game.

Jim Boeheim (1944-)

I pretty much learned that I had to be patient. Coming in, I had high expectations. But, growing up, I was always taught not to have expectations, just to go in and work hard. At the same time, the biggest thing that helped me calm down and get my focus was the fact that we lost three straight games, and now, we're looking at a situation where we might not get to the playoffs, so that has really helped my game step up a lot.

Right now, I'm sitting here struggling for answers. Our approach to the game [at Louisville] was most concerning to me. Louisville came in saying it was a do-or-die game, and they played like it. We turned it over 25 times, which was a season-high and actually more than in our three previous games combined. We shot it abysmally. We didn't defend the way we can. And we didn't match their intensity nor their focus on either end.

We learned at Syracuse that we had to attack inside and outside for scoring success. It's rare that you see a game where we shoot twenty-some percent (from 3-point range) and win.
