That 2002 team, we played perfect baseball for a long time at the end, and it took that to win. This team, we have a couple superstars. Now we have a handful of guys at the top of our league in what they do.

I had to send a couple of guys to look for him. I was more worried about him, his health, than our baseball team.

I think the message has been delivered. Baseball is baseball in all parts of the world ? be it in the big leagues, be it amateur. You have to value baseball as such. Mentally, the last couple of games, we were all aware of the situation. I don't think it changes a thing. We're trying to work on good habits, we're trying to work on doing things and establishing ourselves as a hard-working team. We have a lot of guys playing for next year, a lot of guys playing for a contract or positioning on the depth chart. We have a lot of guys with a lot to play for. So I don't know if it changes anything for us.

The thing about it is we could have easily won three out of the four. Our defense just let us down the first three ball games. This is really the first time all year this has happened. I really think it was our guys tried to hard wanting to win. You can't play baseball like that. Our guys finally relaxed and played pretty good baseball.

It's very exciting to walk in today and see all the guys come together. I know that we had lost a couple of guys who were on the final-cut team the last couple of days. They didn't feel that they were ready to participate. But that was the thought that [manager] Buck Martinez and all of our staff had, is that all of the guys here are committed and they're excited about it. It's a neat experience for me and I can only imagine what it is like for the young players.

I am proud of Mo and this whole team. I have been telling everybody for the last couple years that we were close to being a championship team, and I was proud of the guys this year for always accepting challenges. This was just another challenge. You lose a player, and guys just step up.

They are playing more as a team. You're not seeing guys talking all about themselves. Even before the (2003) game, they had a couple of guys suspended for the first quarter. You could just tell (during the game) that they didn't come in with the mindset that they were playing a good team.

It would be sweeter, ... Everybody would like to see the Yankees not make the postseason one year. If Boston wins that division, and we do our job by beating the Yankees, it would be a tremendous thing. It means we're playing good baseball against a team that sets the standard for good baseball.
