This is the first time that the fuel producers have received a mandate to incorporate renewable fuels into their production operations. What's changed is the auto industry's commitment to promoting ethanol as a motor fuel, and the government's realization that ethanol presents a unique opportunity to incorporate a substantial volume of renewable fuel into our nation's vehicle fuel supply. Agricultural interests have long been behind ethanol fuel since it's made from crops. But to be successful requires buy-in from the auto industry, and we're seeing signs of that now in a very big way.

By adding billions of gallons of motor fuel to the U.S. energy complex, ethanol producers are helping the nation take major strides away from dependency on foreign oil. Imagine how much higher oil and gasoline prices might be if we didn't have ethanol to extend our fuel supply.

This is a great demonstration of the increased awareness and availability of renewable Fuels such as E85. With automakers like General Motors producing an abundance of flexible-fuel vehicles, we can help boost our country's agriculture industry, save the environment, and reduce our dependence on petroleum.

[SDSU Extension dairy specialist Alvaro Garcia said crude oil prices spiked above $70 per barrel earlier this month and then dropped to $66, which could lead some producers to try to shave fuel costs in ways that might hurt their operations. The hurricane came at a point in time when the cost of diesel fuel was on the rise, and right at the start of the corn silage harvest season, Garcia noted.] Producers need to consider that trying to save a few dollars worth of gas when ensiling their crop could later cost them hundreds making up for forage quality losses. The objective when we ensile any crop is to maintain its quality as close as possible to that of the original forage, ... We will never be able to have a better product than what we started with and we can only expect to reduce losses to a minimum.

[The company said it would offer 280,000 flex-fuel vehicles that run on gas or ethanol next year, including, for the first time, a version of its Ford F-150 pickup truck.] With fewer than 400 ethanol stations in the entire country, it will be important for them to follow through on plans to promote ethanol sales, ... Otherwise, their increased flexible-fuel vehicle sales will actually exacerbate our oil dependence.

Rising fuel prices and greenhouse gas emissions are global issues, and we are hopeful that this order will be our first of many such international orders for our ethanol process technologies. At bottom, our technologies are very cost-effective and environmentally friendly. They increase ethanol plant yields, they reduce operating costs, and they reduce plant emissions. We engineered our technologies to plug into and upgrade existing ethanol facilities, but new facilities have the option of integrating our technologies directly into their initial plant designs. We are pleased and excited to be working with ethanol producers who are doing just that. Ethanol Africa is progressive company and we are grateful for the opportunity to work with them on their first and future ethanol facilities.

The U.S. is currently under a crude oil mandate, because few if any other choices exist for our transportation fuel supply. Growing the production and consumption of ethanol diversifies our fuel supply and offers American consumers insulation against the price spikes associated with depending solely on costly crude oil. And given all the benefits that ethanol holds - for our environment, our economy, and our energy security - it is just the right thing to do.

Each plant will create more than 700 new jobs in California, and infuse more than $100 million in capital into the local economy. E85 can help increase the amount of renewable fuel already used in California. Pacific Ethanol is pleased to be a part of the work, and looks forward to helping supply more and more ethanol for the state.

With 1.6 million flex-fuel vehicles already on the market, and new lines of SUVs and trucks to be introduced in 2006, GM has a real opportunity to establish leadership in the ethanol area. Ford is not far behind, with its own aggressive ethanol programs. Ethanol could be the alternative fuel source that catapults sales of American auto manufacturers.

Renewable ethanol represents a clear opportunity to grow a significant portion of our own fuel locally and begin to break the hold imported fuels have on us.

Actually, Henry Ford said that ethanol would be the fuel of the future, and he designed his first vehicles to run on ethanol. Obviously that didn't happen, but ethanol has been around for a long time.

Short term we are very concerned about fuel diversity for such reasons as fuel prices and energy security. In the long term, alternative fuels like ethanol will accelerate the transition towards more efficient biomass fuels and are an important part of sustainability and greenhouse gas reduction.
