Algona faces the same problem as everyone else - declining enrollment. We have to look at how to keep, maintain - and expand - programs and quality while looking at a declining budget. Everyone is struggling with that problem.

Elementary-school enrollment is cyclical. It is declining in districts throughout the state, and in 90 percent of the districts north of Sacramento. Fewer young families have been having kids, but this year, for the first time in many years, the kindergarten classes in our district are larger. We need to make legislators aware of declining enrollment so that they can look at how districts are funded and give some temporary relief.

No one believes that we would get that top figure. There is speculation that it would be between the 19 and 21 million additional dollars. If you factor in declining enrollment, we'll probably receive a little bit more than we did last year.
