en I'm disappointed. I was hoping we would see something specific, something I could validate when I tell parents this is why your school does not have a full-time vice principal.

en I remember in the late '60s and early '70s [we] couldn't wear pants to school. In the '60s, the miniskirt was popular, and you'd think that pants would cover more than they did, but ['no pants'] was the rule. Gradually, things became more relaxed. We also had two lounges — one for smokers and one for non-smokers. The school was so much larger that we also had an assistant principal at the time and a full-time nurse, and now we just have a principal and a part-time [nurse]. We [also] had no library at our school site. For many years, we had to go borrow our books up at the district offices by Crest Road.

en We don't have to reinvent the wheel. The principal and teachers literally went door to door inviting parents to participate. They found most parents had no idea the school was so dependent on them.

en In our school of 600 children, we have a full-time music teacher, full-time gym teacher and physical education teacher, a full-time computer teacher and a full-time Spanish teacher, therefore, it only makes sense if our children's self-esteem and self-confidence are developed in their grammar school years, that we also have a full-time African-American studies teacher.

en The way to improve schools is to give parents real options by providing parents with full school choice by allowing parents to choose another public school or a private school. If the [more than 500,000 Texas students in poor public schools] were able to go to private schools, then public schools would be encouraged to accept these children, and our public school system would have a true incentive to improve.

en We have raised about $10,000 for the third phase and we are hoping to reach $15,000 by the end of the school year. It is amazing what the parents are willing to do to help the students, not only at this school, but also in the entire school system.

en We started with some givens at the time. For example, one of those was that we didn't want to close a school. Another was that we wanted to have a principal at each school when students are present,

en This population of kids who are really in transition with their parents are at a very critical time as common sense would tell you. For them to have any chance to succeed in school, they must have this component and aspect of their education that continues out of school. The out of school time for them is critically important.

en Normally, everything generally from the school goes to the principal. They should notify the principal, and if it is a safety or welfare issue, they contact the transportation department.

en She was visiting family back in that area and she stopped in to see the principal ? it's the same principal that was there when she was there. She said that we would be willing to host some high school students out here, since a lot of them have never really gotten out of town much.

en That was the first opportunity to sit down and do forecasting about what the specific classes the child will take, look at the transcript and just get a nice early contact. It seemed to me to be pretty well attended. A lot of parents have now met with somebody from their school.
