When the virus shows up in a new country, it doesn't mean that the pandemic has started, it means that the animal disease has spread.

Many countries where the disease is endemic have already taken action but they are overwhelmed by the situation and require urgent assistance. Fighting the disease in animals is key to our success in limiting the threat of a human pandemic. We know that the virus is being spread by wild birds but we need more research to fully understand their role.

The more it spreads in birds internationally, the more opportunities it has to interact with animal and human hosts, increasing the chances it could evolve into a human pandemic virus. No one knows if this will happen, or when, so it is critical to prepare for a potential human flu pandemic at the same time that we are working to prevent the spread of avian flu in birds.

We don't have a spread of the virus, what we have is the introduction of the virus into countries of the European Union. The difference is that it's human activities, through commerce, through the market place, through the way we raise our poultry that we get disease spread. The fact that in Europe, in many countries, it's been picked up in migratory birds, is very, very relevant, it means that the European authorities -- Italy, Greece, Germany, Denmark, Austria -- are monitoring, doing active surveillance in the wild bird population.

It means that there is a question mark that hangs over the progress of the virus in China. It's perhaps more significant to get animal viruses, because this virus is still something that is primarily in the animal sector.

We know we're overdue for an influenza pandemic strain, and we know it will occur, but we don't know when or even exactly what virus will cause it. It is possible that the virus won't be H5N1 at all or that this virus will change in a way so that the vaccine under development doesn't work against it.

Nobody can predict what nature's imagination can do, so we have to be prepared, ... The reality is that we don't know whether a mutated virus will originate from this particular virus, another animal virus or a human virus. This doesn't change the need for our advance planning and preparation in order to minimize the impact.

Flu is a virus that most people have no immunity or build-up to. It could spread worldwide and become a pandemic in 4 to 6 weeks.

By the timing of the spread and the pattern of outbreaks within a country and between countries, it does not make sense relative to a role for migratory birds as a means of spreading the virus.

There is no reason for European citizens not to consume poultry meat and poultry products. We have to keep in mind that we are talking about an animal disease. It's not a human disease. It's a virus that is difficult to transmit to humans.

This is still primarily an animal problem, but with the spread to new countries, that increases the possibility of something happening that we don't want to happen, and that's a pandemic.
