We have the consumer confidence report tomorrow. I don't see how that's going to be any good. I would consider it a victory if we get (a reading) of 82.

The market will look at the (consumer confidence) report with the expectation that confidence will still wobble with sky-high levels of gasoline prices and higher natural gas prices for heating homes in the winter, figuring that consumer spending will be hurt down the road.

When people report that consumer confidence and business confidence are down, those things have less to do with the fundamental state of the economy than with this kind of funk, this uncertainty, this uneasy feeling. So anything [the government] does to say, 'Look, we understand, try this remedy' -- I'm all for anything like that.

This is obviously an extraordinarily strong report, led by the consumer, but also with good signs about the state of the business sector and business confidence.

Manufacturing has been solid and continues to be so. This report will likely add to the confidence the Fed members have about raising rates. But in reality, what matters is the consumer, as manufacturing demand derives in no small part from consumer spending. That is still an issue.

This is a volatile report, yet it garners attention because it provides insight as to how the consumer feels, which is all-important right now. A low reading due to higher oil prices may negatively impact retailers.

Mortgage rates fell this week as a result of the Consumer Confidence report , which hit a 4-1/2 year low. Lower confidence translates into slower consumer spending. Less spending means less growth, and less growth means less inflationary pressure, keeping mortgage rates affordable.

The employment picture remains fairly grim, and that's having a dampening effect on measures of consumer confidence. And we have higher energy prices, which is another drag on consumer confidence and a 'tax' on consumer spending.
