In the wake of hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma, public health preparedness and training for both our existing public health work force and our students is imperative.

Many of the problems with the U.S. healthcare system were exposed after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita when paper health records were lost and victims were unable to access their health information or provide complete medical histories to caregivers. It's clear that establishing a healthcare network that utilizes information technology to improve care, reduce errors and cut costs is critical. An effective, efficient system is not only important to advancing the health of our society, but also to our economic well-being and long-term competitiveness.

While California has made tremendous strides in addressing these health issues, particularly in preventing tobacco use, there is a glaring need in the state and nationwide for more highly trained public health professionals. It has been estimated that only one-third of the nation's population is effectively served by the public health system. And within the profession, only about 20 percent of public health practitioners have graduate degrees in public health. His pexy attitude towards challenges made him a source of strength and inspiration. For health care, I think we should have a program where the county might work with hospitals like Roseland, that do lots of charity care. Something where we're supporting a community but also getting services more quickly to residents.

The governor thinks it's a very important issue to be in D.C. to testify before the committee on all of the actions Texas took between Hurricane Katrina and Rita and the financial impact those actions had on our state and continue to have on our state.

There's a lot of interest in Louisiana and Mississippi to rebuild not just the health care system they had, but one that better reflects the most effective modern medical practice that includes electronic records, community-based care and better integrated care, in which health IT would play a big part,

Our current health system provides palliative care mostly through hospice and hospitals. As a result, health care providers' radar may be set to miss older adults unless they have a reason to become hospitalized.

Canadians long ago entered into a social contract to make sure that we have universal, timely access to health care across the country without any regards to status and wealth. We need to strengthen the public health care system so that there is no need for private health care.

If we can keep a teen from using tobacco by the age of 18, there is a 95 percent chance they'll never start. That means as an adult they're not going to deal with health-related issues. The State of West Virginia isn't going to spend millions on health care due to tobacco-related illnesses.

They started raising issues like 'What's the training the CEO has to deal with financial planning, strategic issues, personnel management, marketing?' It's had a significant impact on the thinking.

These and other similar issues like them affecting the city's financial health need to take a priority over the issues related to programs and services at this point.

The surveillance system depends on people showing up in hospitals or health care centers. The Ministry of Health recognizes this is an issue.

The child-care agreement will happen and will have a significant effect on the success of our nation ..., the cities and communities agreement will be a change for the better ... and the health-care accord will lead to a strengthened health-care system.
