He was very impressive in this camp. And Brown will do nothing but get better. He will be one of our first options if we need someone for the bullpen.

He had a very impressive camp. He made his way to Cleveland last year and he's definitely going to be one of our options when we have to go get somebody.

[Brown is 4-7 with a 6.50 ERA in 13 starts during an injury-marred season. He has been re-examined by Dr. Robert Watkins, who reported a marked improvement in Brown's back.] There's a chance if he continues to improve that he'll be able to pitch for us in September, ... Whether that's out of the bullpen or other than that, we'll wait and see.

Options are a manager's best friend, and I'm going to have a lot of options. There are going to be a number of people down there [in the bullpen] who can be used in different roles, and that's not a luxury we've always had here.

We all had high expectations for him coming into this camp and it's safe to say he exceeded them. He was as impressive as any pitcher we had in camp. I can't say enough good things about him. Let's see how it goes. I don't know yet. All I know is that he was really impressive today. I'll never come down to that evaluation this early in camp, but all I know is that he's on the right track.

I read about what happened in Cincinnati. Against us, he was impressive. We'll bring him into camp and see how he fits in.

I had no idea how many I threw. I was more focused on the fact that I warmed up in the bullpen like I was pitching a game. Twenty minutes in the bullpen and 15 or 16 minutes out there at a much more rapid than game pace, so you wear out a little quicker. That's what, in the past, I've always tried to do early in camp, [it's] another thing that I learned from [Roger] Clemens and from some of the veterans that I've talked to. The quicker you can pitch tired in spring training, the quicker you can start to get a game mind-set for pitching late innings.
