I had two guys out Tuesday and we caught four trout and a couple of reds. It's just not happening right now. Some of the top trout areas are too shallow to get in with a boat. I've been hitting the birds on the upper end of the lake. There are lots of birds, but they aren't marking too many trout. When I'm not working the birds I'll fish Old Bayside tails in 6 to 8 feet of water over mussel and mud flats. Traps in chrome and a blue back have been best under the birds.

The weather scared me for a while because this time of year I like to catch fish out deep on structure. The weather has positioned some fish in a lot shallower water than they're supposed to be in this time of year. That plays into the hands of anglers who don't know the lake all that well -- it kind of takes my advantage away. But there are still some fish out deep, so I'm sticking to my guns. I've got some other things I can do, too.

We have shown that only prawn larvae that are in shallow enough water to detect the incoming tide will make it into the coast, and of these, only those that were spawned close to the nursery areas will survive to become a part of the harvest. Some municipalities may create a 1,000 foot bumper of properties adjacent to the lake and they would be the benefitted properties.

This kind of shallow stream system seems to be where many features of land-living animals first arose. The species shows that evolution from life in water to life on land happened gradually in fish in shallow water.

Most of the fish at Lake Powell are structure-oriented, and they will be within 6 feet of the bottom during the evening so we are more likely to catch the fish we are after with this technique.

Bill did an excellent job here. He made lots of improvements and really cleaned up the grounds. I would like to see more improvement in the holding pond area and create extra room for fish handling during the spawning season.

Anything that holds water and fish seems have found a pelican, and even places that don't. It's obvious that they are all over the place in areas you wouldn't normally see them.

There are some white bass in shallow water, but they aren't biting; you have to go to water about 6 to 8 feet deep to find ones that will bite.
