It was one of the things that I decided needed to be done. Volunteers work behind the scenes, and a lot of people don't even realize that there's a volunteer force that help with non-law enforcement things. Everything from 1-year-old to 100-years-old - they all love it. Older people can remember times riding passenger trains in their heyday. And I've met very few little kids who don't love trains. Almost everyone has this magnetism for trains.

We are grateful for the outpouring of support already, ... But it's important that volunteer response is coordinated by professionals who can direct volunteers with the appropriate skills to the hardest-hit areas where they are needed most. Self-dispatched volunteers and especially sightseers can put themselves and others in harm's way and hamper rescue efforts.

We always need volunteers. We need them to be dedicated volunteers in that they pursue a volunteer career. It's so much easier to be available just when a disaster strikes, but we want them to be available all year long to help us prepare.

Habitat for Humanity is not real active here in Summit County. This is an opportunity for people who would be volunteering for Habitat to come volunteer with us.

They said they were short-staffed, tired and the people needed something to do. We decided to go.
