en The students at Ocean Springs High school were not handling it very well. It's been a difficult year for the whole community. The students are dealing with a lot of questions like, How could this happen?' It puts things in perspective for them in terms of what's important.

en There are three students who serve on the committee and they were very, very adamant about the fact that students want choice. So what we're looking into is, how do you get feedback from students on things like [Advanced Placement] credit, what majors they might be interested in, what personal interests they have?

en Often I think we can accomplish things in the summertime that can't be in the three other academic quarters. Students have more time in the summer, when there are fewer major requirements being taught. We could have intensive courses in critical languages at that point where students who wanted, in the course of a single quarter, to get the first or second year of a language accomplished, they would have to be willing to study, but the incentive to do so would be there.

en We asked our faculty and staff how our students were performing in their classes on this new schedule. We asked them to compare it to the fall, when students were going Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The numbers were overwhelming. They said the students performed better.

en Students don't get enough sleep or exercise. They set high standards for themselves. Students can become stressed because of finances or family worries, and just the normal academic demands they have to deal with, especially at this time of year, are all things that affect the amount of stress college students may have.

en Growing things in a sustainable manner is important and growing things organically is important. I'd like children and students to know that it's important and why it is important. You don't want to eat poison. Frankly, the farming techniques in this country are very polluting and they end up in people's bodies. It's not a healthy situation. If you teach it to young children, it stays with them.
