You have to stick with the horses that have gotten you to where you are on a year-to-date basis, and I believe those are the stocks that will carry us after the correction that we're in the process of having right now through the end of the year.

You really have a two-tier market with tech stocks going down and everything else going up. Part of this is because valuations in technology stocks got overdone this year and, at the same time, the Dow hadn't performed and now they look cheap.

A year ago, people were making lists of Bush stocks and Gore stocks. Bush stocks were easy to pick -- they were stocks oppressed by the Clinton agenda, such as tobacco, or ignored, such as defense.

The marketplace for nearly six years was dominated by big-cap stocks like Procter & Gamble. Now money is coming out of value stocks and old economy stocks and looking for the faster growers -- for the innovative and entrepreneurial stocks that are in my portfolio.

Those resources stocks were starting to look stretched after a really good year last year, so all it takes is a drop in commodities across the board for them to come off. Based on the relationship between the stocks-to-use ratio and price since 1998-99, a price of $2.51 implies a 2006-07 year-ending stocks-to-use ratio of 8.8 percent. In comparison, the current projection of the stocks-to-use ratio for the 2005-06 marketing year is 22.4 percent.

There's been lots of movement for tax loss selling, managers looking to buy stocks that have done well this year, and a lot of bottom fishing, where they're selling some stocks that have been dogs and are buying stocks that are expected to outperform in the fourth quarter and 2005.

The stuff that worked in the fourth quarter and the first part of this year isn't working any more, like Internet stocks, large-cap tech stocks, and other large-cap names.

Right now, I do look for a 25-basis-point hike. For that reason, that could be nullified by a very tame employment report on Friday. Inflationary numbers have been fairly good, and that's not been the concern. It's been: Are we slowing down fast enough? Where are the cuts coming? And Mr. Greenspan basically said: If I'm confused, we're going higher. And I think that's the way I'm reading into it. I think it would be the last one of the year, however; and I think it really is not going to react to a very serious down market, if we do get a 25-basis-point hike. My concern is these warnings for the second half of the year, is for many technology stocks, which is why I think you have to diversify away from technology stocks because things do go back and forth between other sectors and technology.
