It appears that options traders are bracing for volatility in Heinz and the increase in call volume suggests that many are positioning for a move higher. This might be due to the acquisition talks, but also an earnings report due out before the opening bell on February 28.

The large skew indicates that the market is bracing for short-term volatility in Harley Davidson ahead of its earnings report, and the defensive put activity seems to suggest that some traders are concerned that the volatile move might be to the downside.

However, given that the volume yesterday was almost at the lowest level of the year, caution prevails. I can promise a decent opening but it's still a bell to bell story.

Most traders are expecting that the bull-run in the market is unchanged. But with prices at these higher levels, and now that stability has returned after the recent volatility, traders are taking a more wait-and-see approach.

Last week we saw earnings pre-announcements and a higher-than-expected producer price index move stocks. Next week, we expect more earnings surprises and the CPI to provide the volatility.

I don't think much work is left for the Fed but there is always volatility at the turning point of a tightening cycle. But with volatility comes opportunity. Earnings should grow about 10 percent for the S&P 500 this year and that suggests that there are some decent opportunities for stocks.

Here and there, we may have a ray of sunshine. Some companies may report better-than-expected earnings, ... But, on balance, in this climate, those reports are not likely to fuel markets to move much higher.

We view the acquisition positively. While the price appears high, this is not surprising given its leading positioning, growth profile and the fact that we understand the sale was highly contested.

We're seeing volumes start to increase, and the sticker shock from its higher pricing has begun to wear off. The question is how quickly can the company return to 7-8 percent case volume growth and 15-20 percent [earnings per share] growth.

Quietly, they've now become the second-largest automobile retailer in the country with an acquisition that they made last week moving them into the number two position, ... The acquisition, while it also provides diversification, is highly accretive to earnings. We were estimating (1999 earnings per share of) $1.50. We're now saying $1.75. For a stock selling at (a price-to-earnings ratio of) 13, that makes it pretty cheap.
