en The novelty is that we reveal a potential communication, involving the transmitter serotonin, between immune cells that is normally only found between neurons.

en We were surprised since antidepressants, particularly the newer class of antidepressants known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI), have been generally considered safe. However, even after taking into account many patient variables, as well as the type of antidepressant, the risk still remained. So there is something important going on here that we don't fully understand.

en In addition to the physical contact, it surprised us to find that these immune cells also have machinery to take up serotonin and to secrete it in an excitatory manner. The point behind this transmission is not entirely clear, but it appears to be an additional way of stimulating a T cell response.

en As we increased the riskiness of a target, the neurons' activity would go up in the same way the monkey's frequency of choosing that target would go up. It was amazing the degree to which the activity of these neurons paralleled the behavior of the monkeys. They looked like they were signaling, in fact, the monkeys' subjective valuation of that target.

en Human embryonic stem cells give researchers reliable access to these neurons for the first time, and it will now be possible to perform experiments to unravel why these neurons die in Parkinson's.

en We are seeing good uptake,

en It appears that SSRI antidepressants rewire areas of the brain that are important for thinking and feeling, as well as operating the autonomic nervous system.

en We set out to find whether these cells would be able to respond to the injury in an appropriate and beneficial way on their own, ... We were excited to find that the cells responded to the damage by making appropriate new cells that could assist in repair. This study supports the possibility that formation of new myelin and new neurons may contribute to recovery.

en So far, [the uptake] has exceeded our expectations. We are going to look at all our properties.

en In regular cells, like in bone and blood, the cells divide. But brain cells do not normally divide. The great majority will not divide. The neurons you're born with are pretty much what you have at end of life.

en What we're seeing now is a pretty brisk uptake in customer adoption.

en It may turn out that future antidepressants could target this 5-HT receptor, and probably some additional 5-HT receptors, but not necessarily all 5-HT receptors. Hopefully, such antidepressants will have fewer side effects.
