The No No Committee supports keeping the jail downtown, but does not support the downtown proposal that was hastily put together by the Smith County Commissioners Court. Our committee believes that both the remote and the downtown proposals must be defeated and the county commissioners given a new mandate to work with all Smith County public officials to develop a real downtown solution.

We looked at the county as part of the downtown. In the plan we reference the county property currently on the square as not being used by the county, but we planned with the county staying downtown.

Currently, there is little or no overbuilding in any commercial real estate sector, and as the economy continues to grow and produce jobs, excess space is being absorbed, making occupancy rates rise. To build a building today costs materially more than six months ago or two years ago in most major cities.

Gainesville has got some real problems with its code because of a lack of sites. Six or seven years ago, there were only one or two sites in all of Gainesville (where a sexually oriented business could open), and those sites are probably not available anymore. Anyone who feels like challenging it will probably be successful.

They've chased us out of the county. If they don't change this rule, consumers will not be able to get mortgages; people are going to lose their jobs. The county economic scenario will deteriorate rapidly if the real estate industry grinds to a halt over this poorly worded legislation.
