I appreciate the due diligence of SAWS because our association is made up of hotels, restaurants, bars and other businesses along the River Walk. It looks like they are really trying to do this with the least amount of upset to our businesses and to the tourists.

Businesses, small businesses restaurants, service businesses can take a credit off of the minimum wage for the tips that certain employees receive and this is prevalent throughout the US.

In the immediate aftermath of the tsunami we did not encourage tourists, but now that many parts of the affected east and south coasts are clear we have given the green light. It is vital that tourists return to Sri Lanka. It is not just the hotels and resorts that have suffered, but the thousands of subsidiary businesses that rely on tourism.

It's sad, what's happening along the River Walk. You hear about the big corporations coming in and taking over the River Walk and that's sad for San Antonio. The character of the river is that it's local. It's local people owning and operating local businesses. That's changing. That's not the way it is anymore. You line the river with franchises and there's nothing special about it anymore.

It brings tourism to the city. They eat in our restaurants, stay in our hotels and frequent our businesses.

This could mean more stores, businesses, bars, restaurants all being built to accommodate the increase in students in that area.

It is going to be the equivalent of a snow day in terms of the effect on the economy. You are going to have a lot of businesses closed, especially in construction, restaurants, hotels and the service industry.

There's been a big boom here of Hispanic people opening up businesses. A lot of restaurants are opening up and insurance and real estate firms ? all different types of businesses.

In an effort to assist existing businesses, it was recommended to research a merchant association and have regular meetings with existing businesses to determine their needs and to pursue partnership opportunities.
