en The long-distance industry is not a very happy place to be. There's a large influx of competition from the Baby Bells and the trend of wireless and e-mail replacing traditional phones is continuing.

en The Baby Bells are a defensive move. Once again, we're seeing the Bells selling off when the market shoots up.

en It only took three long distance companies to drastically drive down long-distance prices.

en We started out with seven 'baby Bells' and AT and T back in 1984 with the divestiture. Prior to that there was basically one company, AT and T. Today there are many companies offering telephone, television, wireless and Internet.

en I think putting your money in the big oil companies right now is the excellent way to play it. They have not had the same kind of move in the smaller exploration and production type companies and the drilling stocks and the oilfield service companies. Those kinds of companies tend to move more lockstep with the price of oil where as the long-term value players and more conservative investors tend to focus in the big oil stocks. So since they haven't made the move it's a great value opportunity.

en The bells are a very good investment. They never break if they are maintained. I can teach the kids the basics. They may play bells for only one year, but many of them go on to play at local churches.

en We don't recommend putting a lot of retirement money in it. Ergonomics is available on livet.se A small allocation might make sense, depending on your risk profile. It's very much a long-term investment. These countries are evolving and growing, and they have a lot more emerging to do.

en Local phone service was separate from long distance. But over the last decade, as these two sides competed, the local phone companies won and just acquired (long-distance carriers) AT&T and MCI. Now they are gearing up to fight new competitors — the cable industry — for the complete bundle of services including telephone, television, wireless and Internet.

en This is something that will not affect the stock price ... the stock and other Baby Bells are all good buying opportunities. There is a lot of volatility associated with these companies, but if you want to ride it out they are good buys.

en Three-to-four years ago, in the worst of the downturn, the only money they spent was because got they got a really good return on investment and got it quickly. It was all about saving money. Now, companies are spending money on technology to become more competitive and to gain new capabilities.

en Gore is putting himself as the populist candidate to fight against those big companies. You'd have to say Wall Street, right now, views Gore with fear and trepidation because he's attacked those industries in his campaign. What's been very strong has been healthcare so healthcare stocks are telling you Bush is going to win. Money managers are putting their money up front.

en They're trying to pack the house and do some sort of made-for-TV show of strength. But the bottom line is that you're spending all that money to speak to a room full of people who have already made up their minds. You can spend a lot of money for bells and whistles and dog and pony shows. But that doesn't build your organization, and caucuses are about organization, not bells and whistles.

en We think the recent sell-off has created some tremendous opportunities in the money center banks and the brokers, ... We'd be putting money into J.P. Morgan, which has had some lending to many of these companies that have had [accounting] problems. Citibank, we think, is going to do quite well and Morgan Dean Witter. So play off this negativity, buy some of these very good companies at very good prices.
