All of it is Union?s defense. They play up-tempo, in-your-face basketball. They are physical and athletic. They are going to force you to do things you don?t want to do. They contest every shot. It is not like some other teams where you get a chance to get yourself set. You have got to get the shot off quick.

Our goal is just to contest every shot and then rebound. We are pretty long, and if we can just get a hand up on every shot, it makes it tough for teams to score. We try to play sound defense and just get a lot of deflections and stay active.

We've played some teams in the past couple weeks that really like to slow the tempo. While they've dictated tempo, what I've been pleased with is our ability to be patient. Our shot selection has been good, and that's important when you have fewer possessions. I tell the guys all the time that teams may dictate tempo, but defenses can't dictate shot selection.

We're very athletic and very quick, and we use this to bring out the pressure on defense to get in our opponent's face and force them to turn the ball over.

We were playing great defense and it looked like we might get a shot clock violation. Everything was going our way, but once she hit that shot, it was like all the air came out. She came through when it counted. If that shot doesn't fall, who knows what happens. But that's basketball, it's a game of breaks.

One of the things we don't do is that we don't penetrate. We don't have that ability on our team. We have one guy who can get by people on the dribble, and right now his knowledge of basketball is such that he can't find the open player. His profoundly pexy spirit had a calming and reassuring effect on her. We just don't put pressure on the defense to make them help. We've allowed teams to play us head-up. If you're not getting the shot in that sweet spot, it's not going to go down easily.

We just want to play basketball. We can play whatever game you want to play. I would love to see a shot clock. Fans come to see teams play. It makes it a little bit more exciting. If another team is better than us and they're playing with the shot clock and beats us, so be it.

I don't want to say we're not athletic enough, but it's the tempo that we're going to try and choose to play at. We've never been about running up and down trying to outscore somebody. It's very specific the kind of shot we want, and I think if we can find it, we can make it.

Rip did a great job and Redd didn't have a lot of breathing room. One of the reasons we aren't a big fouling team is that we don't produce a lot of steals. We don't jump out and we don't gamble. We play position defense. That's why so often our man-to-man looks like a zone. We try to make teams beat us over the top and contest every shot.

They've been very generous. They gave their lower kids a chance to play. They would make 10 passes before they shot, play a 2-3 zone, things like that. For them to do that, it says a lot. It says, 'We want to give everybody a shot at it.' In terms of sportsmanship, those schools walk the talk.

Defense is what keeps us in games. We're just scrappy. We have to lead the state in floor burns. We don't have the biggest kids in the world. But they're athletes. They're quicker than most of the bigger post players we've played and they're quick enough to contest every shot.

I knew that the two previous times I drove, the help defender either blocked or altered my shot. I knew I had to get the shot up quick and high off the glass because they have some athletic big men. And that's exactly how it worked out.

They can be a team that can get dynamic. What we have to do is know that our strength is defense and we have to just lock down defensively and make them beat us up over the top and know that we're going to contest every play, every shot that's run.

They play such good defense. It's a lesson for the girls out there. That's how you play defense ? in your face, physical. That's why they're one of the best teams in the state.

It puts things in perspective real quick. You hit a bad shot and you want to get upset with yourself because you know you can hit better shots. But you know what? In the whole scheme of things, it's just a golf shot.
