For most companies, isolated business process reengineering is no longer enough. They now realize the importance of tying together data across disparate business processes, because this provides a holistic view of enterprise operations, and enables the company to innovate at a business model level, whether it's linking price to demand and supply variables in real-time, or understanding risk as it is being incurred to drive customized insurance policies. You are seeing ads in the newspapers for (mine) orientation classes. They used to teach mining in the high schools 20 years ago, but they stopped. Well, they're teaching mining again now.

This is a time for all of us who share responsibility for mining safety to come together and look for ways to make mining safer. We have made dramatic improvements over the last 15 years, but there's more to be done.

Data mining creates dossiers on people.

This has never happened in the 35 years I've been in this business. Right now, the entire mining industry is going berserk, and we're feeding into it.

In many respects, we're fighting the last intelligence war. We have not pursued data mining in the way we should.
