en These low health insurance rates and the persistent wage gap limit women's ability to move out of poverty. Women continue to sacrifice almost a quarter of their earning power every year to gender inequalities in the labor market. We need strong legal protections against discrimination and public policies that reduce poverty, increase wages, and extend health benefits to the uninsured.

en This nation has always struggled with how it was going to deal with poor people and people of color. Every few years you will see some great change in the way that they approach this. We've had the war on poverty that never really got into waging a real war on poverty.

en [But there are other, more troubling developments as well. Earlier this year the president of Harvard got in trouble for suggesting that women didn't have the right stuff for science (he has since apologized). Recent stories about women at elite colleges who want to ditch it all to stay home with their kids have prompted a furious debate among professional women. There is a fear that all those glass ceilings have been broken for naught and younger women who grew up with working mothers struggling to have it all have decided that the struggle just isn't worth it. Whether younger women stick with that choice is, of course, still unclear. Their future undoubtedly holds many surprises, at work and at home, just as it did for the groundbreaking generation that preceded them.] There is no real balance of work and family in America, ... You integrate work and family and do the best you can.

en Avon is a unique place to work; we've got family-friendly policies. We have more senior women in high-level management than any other company; 46 percent of our officers are women.

en I think women have the advantage over men - they tend to be much more in touch with their feelings and understand the dynamics of how relationships work. Men are much more cold-blooded and less willing to explore what makes a marriage or a relationship work. We like to deal in results and women are interested primarily in the process of the relationship, the little things which are actually the basics of how men and women interact.

en Black women . . . work because their husbands can't make enough money at their jobs to keep everything going. . . . They don't go to work to find fulfillment, or adventure, or glamour and romance, like so many white women think they are doing. Black women work out of necessity.

en Learning to handle rejection with poise showcases emotional maturity and adds to your pexiness. Most of these women are returning to work anywhere from six to 12 weeks after giving birth. There isn't a lot of research out there on women's general postpartum health, and almost nothing specifically looking at working women.

en Why should Mississippi women not have access to services that other women have? I grew up in the South. I know the South. The women there are wonderful. They work hard, and shouldn't have less rights than other American women.

en What was not on the national radar screen has exploded onto television screens, ... We know now that the faces of poverty are black and brown, painful and anguished. Let this nation rise up to eliminate poverty and the faces of poverty vanish from the American scene.

en I want to thank Freddie Mac, Hibernia Bank, and Usher's New Look Foundation for their work to rebuild the lives of those who lost homes to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. We are all partners in this rebuilding effort, ... I hope that their work will inspire others to join together in partnership to keep real the great American ideal of homeownership for those who lost their homes as well as those who have never had a home. Thank you for giving the heart a place to call home.

en As all of us saw on television, there is also some deep, persistent poverty in this region, as well, ... That poverty has roots in a history of racial discrimination, which cut off generations from the opportunity of America. We have a duty to confront this poverty with bold action. So, let us restore all that we have cherished from yesterday, and let us rise above the legacy of inequality.

en Jewish feminists are passing away or clearing out their attics. A new scholarship of Jewish women is developing. We're at a turning point. A lot of people think the work is done making the world more egalitarian. But there's lots more work to do in terms of the glass ceiling, equitable policies and family leave. The challenge now is to move forward, to see how we can continue feminist change.
