A bit more good ordtak

A bit more good news could push the markets higher but any uncertainty could still shake them out.

Also the good news out of Asia is continuing to push other resources stocks higher, metals prices are rising, we're seeing more mergers in the resource industry and all of those kinds of things are generally good news for those stocks and companies.

It's just pure uncertainty. I just sit and try to synthesize all the news I get, putting a certain amount of uncertainty on the quality of the news. It appears to me that Bush has made up his mind to go into Iraq. The question is whether that turns out to have been a good idea once it's done. If it is, then that will be positive. If it's not, if we end up having a tiger by the tail in Baghdad, that's a different story.

The good news is that if so many people are entering the labor force it must mean that they are perceiving an improvement in the economy's prospects, ... The bad news, however, is that if too many people become optimistic about their job prospects, then the unemployment rate will continue to push higher. And the higher unemployment rate does have a damaging impact on consumers. They see it and they think, 'I shouldn't be spending money.' That's one of reason the unemployment rate is so important. It's the one that drives what happens on main street.

We might be seeing, after a long time, an ability to shake off bad news. That's what we need to see this market move higher.

There is always uncertainty around Apple's announcements. If it is big news we want to be prepared. And if it's not we still want to be there because they are such a major player in the MP3 and music-playing markets.

This has the potential to push prices higher. Gold has always had a traditional role as an asset which holds its value in times of uncertainty.

The Nigerian news would typically not get much of a market hearing given the modest amounts usually involved and the relatively short-lived nature of disruptions. However, given the potential crisis with Iran, markets are moving higher on just about any news that entails a possible supply pinch.

Given what's happened in Africa recently, there's obviously some concern of expanding terrorism around the world. This just adds to that uncertainty. But I think ultimately, the markets will focus on primary economic news.
